Blue Lights Season 4 Divides BBC Viewers After Dramatic Return
BBC crime drama Blue Lights returned for its fourth season on Tuesday, September 29, bringing Belfast’s police officers back to the streets — but the new opener has already left viewers sharply divided.
The series, created by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, first premiered in 2023 and quickly earned widespread praise for its portrayal of police officers working in Belfast. Season 4 picks up three years into the careers of Constables Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster and Annie Conlon, as they face a new threat that pushes the police to their limits.
This time, tensions are building around a migrant resource centre, where an increasingly hostile anti-immigration movement uses social media to spread hateful rhetoric.

A New Threat Hits Belfast
The official synopsis sets up a particularly difficult chapter for Grace, Tommy and Annie.
Three years into their work as response officers, the trio are operating under immense pressure as they confront a threat on the streets that even the police struggle to contain.
At the same time, the murder trial of Gerry Cliff begins to uncover a dangerous secret that has remained buried for years. The revelations threaten to cause upheaval both within the police and throughout Belfast’s criminal underworld.
With each officer also facing major decisions about what comes next, the new series puts them in a position where confronting the truth becomes their greatest challenge.
The opening episode immediately throws the team into a major crisis as tensions escalate at a local gathering. Elsewhere, an investigation into Dana Morgan’s narcotics alliance with Tina McIntyre also runs into serious difficulties.
Viewers Split Over the Season Premiere

Despite the anticipation surrounding the return, some BBC viewers were unimpressed by the opening episode.
Several took to X to criticize the storyline, with some questioning its authenticity and describing the episode as boring. One viewer simply admitted they were “disappointed.”
Another wrote: “Well, this isn’t the start to a new series I was hoping for. A tad boring.”
A third viewer, after watching three episodes of the new season, was particularly critical of the opening installment, calling it potentially the weakest episode they had seen across the four seasons and questioning the realism of its riot scenes.
The reaction was far from unanimous, however.
Other Fans Call It “Tense” and “Addictive”

Many longtime viewers were delighted to have Blue Lights back.
One fan described the series as “totally addictive” and wondered whether it was possible to binge-watch the new season. Another simply declared, “Wow what an opener!”
A further reaction was even more enthusiastic, calling the return tense and saying the show was “back with a bang.”
Another viewer said they were glad to see the drama return, while one fan praised Siân Brooke’s performance and described Blue Lights as “a masterpiece of a police procedural,” highlighting its focus on Belfast PSNI officers learning the realities of the job while questioning whether joining the force was the right decision.
The split reaction means the fourth season has already generated plenty of discussion among its audience, with some viewers struggling to connect with the opener while others remain firmly invested in the drama.
Siân Brooke Teases Grace Ellis’ Toughest Test Yet

Before the new season premiered, Siân Brooke discussed what lies ahead for her character, Grace Ellis.
Brooke explained that Grace is once again pushed to her limits professionally. She is eager to progress but increasingly frustrated that her career is not moving forward as quickly as she had hoped.
The actress also revealed that the officers are placed directly in the middle of the action from the very beginning.
The season opens with a major sequence involving an attack on a migrant centre and a mob, leaving Grace and her fellow officers at the centre of the chaos.
That immediate pressure sets the tone for a season in which the characters must contend with threats on the streets while dealing with increasingly complicated questions about their own futures.
With its return now underway, Blue Lights has already prompted two very different reactions from BBC viewers — but whether the season can win over those who were unimpressed by its opening remains to be seen.
Blue Lights is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
