Netflix Is Bringing Manifest Back With Arrivals — And This Time a Mysterious Plane Crash Could Be Connected to a Humanity-Ending Catastrophe

Three years after Manifest appeared to close the book on Flight 828, Netflix is officially returning to its supernatural universe — but the new mystery begins with an entirely different aircraft, a new group of passengers and an even larger threat.

The streamer has ordered Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, a new sci-fi drama from original Manifest creator Jeff Rake alongside returning producers Margaret Easley and Laura Putney.

Rather than continuing directly with the Stone family, the series will introduce a fresh cast and a standalone mystery designed to work for longtime fans and viewers who have never seen the original show.

And the premise immediately feels familiar in the best possible way.

A mysterious plane crash-lands in Denver. Its passengers survive — but emerge unable to remember who they are, where they came from or why they are there.

Their arrival soon becomes part of something much bigger.

A young social worker and a rookie Homeland Security agent begin working with the passengers to uncover the truth, only to discover that they may all be pieces of the same puzzle — one connected to a potential catastrophe capable of ending humanity.

Netflix Chose 8/28 to Announce the Return

Netflix revealed Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery on August 28, 2026 — or 8/28 in the United States.

For Manifest fans, that date was anything but accidental.

The original series revolved around Montego Air Flight 828, whose passengers experienced severe turbulence before landing in New York more than five years after their departure, despite no time having passed for anyone on board.

Netflix has repeatedly used August 28 as an unofficial celebration of the series.

The streamer announced its rescue of Manifest on August 28, 2021, and revealed the final season’s premiere date one year later on August 28, 2022. The confirmation of Arrivals continued that tradition.

The new series will once again come from Warner Bros. Television.

A New Plane, a New Mystery and Passengers With No Memories

The central mystery of Arrivals deliberately echoes the irresistible setup that made Manifest such a phenomenon.

This time, however, nobody simply returns after mysteriously losing years.

The new aircraft crash-lands in Denver.

Its surviving passengers emerge without even the most basic knowledge of themselves.

They cannot explain their identities.

They don’t know their point of origin.

And they have no idea why they have arrived in Denver.

That uncertainty brings a young social worker and inexperienced Homeland Security agent into their lives as authorities attempt to determine exactly what has happened.

But solving the mystery quickly becomes more urgent than identifying the people on the plane.

According to the official synopsis, the group becomes involved in an attempt to prevent a “humanity-ending catastrophe” while gradually discovering that investigators and passengers alike are connected to the mystery they are trying to understand.

It is a premise unmistakably built from Manifest DNA: impossible aviation mystery, strangers drawn together by inexplicable circumstances and an escalating threat that suggests their experiences are connected to something much larger than themselves.

Arrivals Won’t Simply Be Manifest Season 5

Despite taking place in the same universe, Netflix is positioning Arrivals as a new story rather than a conventional fifth season.

The upcoming drama will introduce new characters and explore storylines untouched by the original series.

That approach gives the creative team an important advantage.

Manifest ended its central Flight 828 story in 2023, giving Ben Stone, Michaela Stone and the surviving passengers a definitive resolution.

Reopening that exact storyline could have risked undoing the finale.

Instead, Arrivals appears designed to expand the mythology around unexplained aviation events without requiring the original characters to once again become the center of the story.

Whether familiar faces will appear remains unknown.

As of Netflix’s announcement, no cast for Arrivals had been revealed, and there was no confirmation that Josh Dallas, Melissa Roxburgh or any other original Manifest star would reprise their role.

Jeff Rake Wants New Viewers to Be Able to Start Here

Original creator Jeff Rake is returning for the spin-off alongside Margaret Easley and Laura Putney.

Easley and Putney previously served as co-executive producers on Manifest. For Arrivals, all three will serve as co-creators, co-showrunners, writers and executive producers.

For Rake, the challenge is balancing two very different audiences.

“I’m delighted to be able to tell a new story for the Manifest fans out there and also for a brand-new audience,” he told Netflix.

Rake noted that five years have passed since Manifest first arrived on Netflix and acknowledged that an entire group of potential viewers may have little familiarity with Flight 828.

The creative team’s goal, he explained, has therefore been to make Arrivals rewarding for established fans while ensuring newcomers can understand and enjoy it without four seasons of homework.

That may explain why the new series isn’t simply following another member of the Stone family.

A new plane creates an immediate entry point.

Longtime viewers can look for connections to the mythology they already know, while newcomers can experience the mystery from its beginning.

Netflix Wants to Preserve the Original Show’s DNA

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the United States and Canada, emphasized the importance of bringing back Rake, Easley and Putney.

She said their involvement provides the “creative continuity” needed to expand the franchise while preserving what turned Manifest into a global phenomenon.

The executive-producing team also includes Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke of Compari Entertainment, Len Goldstein of Tall Baby Productions and Jacqueline Levine.

That continuity may be particularly important given how heavily Manifest depended on its evolving mythology.

The original series mixed family drama with disappearing airplanes, supernatural “Callings,” apocalyptic predictions, strange scientific phenomena and questions about fate, faith and interconnectedness.

Exactly how much of that mythology will carry into Arrivals remains deliberately unclear.

The phrase “A New Manifest Mystery” suggests that the new series will exist alongside the original mythology while pursuing a case of its own.

The Original Manifest Began With Flight 828

The series that started everything premiered on NBC in 2018.

Its premise followed passengers aboard Flight 828 who encountered turbulence while flying home from Jamaica.

When they landed, they learned that five and a half years had passed in the outside world even though the flight had felt completely normal to them.

Their families had mourned them.

Relationships had changed.

Children had grown older.

And the returned passengers soon began experiencing mysterious visions and voices known as Callings.

At the center of the story were siblings Ben Stone, played by Josh Dallas, and Michaela Stone, played by Melissa Roxburgh.

The original cast also included J.R. Ramirez, Parveen Kaur, Luna Blaise, Matt Long, Athena Karkanis, Jack Messina and later Ty Doran, among others.

That initial aviation mystery gradually expanded into a much larger question about why Flight 828 disappeared and what had happened to its passengers.

NBC Cancelled the Series Before the Mystery Was Finished

Manifest originally ran for three seasons on NBC.

Then, in 2021, the network cancelled it.

The timing could hardly have been worse for viewers.

Season 3 ended with several huge unresolved developments, including Grace Stone’s death, Eden’s kidnapping and Cal mysteriously returning five years older after disappearing.

The cancellation left the show’s central mythology without its intended conclusion.

Then something unexpected happened.

The first seasons arrived on Netflix.

And Manifest exploded.

The show reached No. 1 on Netflix for more than a month after its cancellation, according to Rake, while fans launched the #SaveManifest campaign and pushed aggressively for the story to continue.

Netflix eventually responded.

Netflix Rescued Manifest With a 20-Episode Final Season

On August 28, 2021, Netflix officially announced that Manifest would return.

The streamer ordered a fourth and final season consisting of 20 episodes — twice the length of a typical ten-episode Netflix season — allowing Rake and the writers to bring the Flight 828 story to a conclusion.

Season 4 was divided into two ten-episode volumes.

The first premiered on November 4, 2022, while the second arrived in June 2023.

For the creative team, the rescue meant they could resolve story threads first introduced years earlier.

Rake later said the final episodes gave the writers an opportunity to pay off many of the clues planted as far back as Season 1.

The series finally concluded with the passengers boarding Flight 828 once more and returning to New York in 2013, effectively resetting much of the timeline while preserving the emotional consequences of everything they had experienced.

At the time, it seemed like a genuine ending.

Now Netflix has found another route back into the universe.

Manifest Became Far Bigger on Netflix Than It Had Been on Network Television

The decision to expand the franchise is easier to understand when looking at the numbers.

According to Netflix, all four seasons of Manifest have accumulated more than 130 million views since early 2023.

Season 4 spent nine weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for English-language television and reached No. 1 in more than 90 countries.

Those numbers demonstrate how dramatically the show’s fortunes changed.

Rake has admitted that Manifest had been successful on NBC but didn’t become a genuine global phenomenon until Netflix audiences discovered it.

Josh Dallas remembers the same transformation.

He said the growing Netflix numbers suddenly turned the show into something much larger, with viewers around the world discovering Flight 828 long after the series had originally premiered.

That international audience has evidently remained valuable enough for Netflix to revisit the concept years after finishing the original story.

The Spin-Off Has Been Developing Quietly for Some Time

Although Netflix only formally confirmed Arrivals on August 28, reports about another Manifest project had been circulating much earlier.

The possibility of a spin-off began attracting attention following the release of Season 4 Part 2 in June 2023.

By late 2024, the project was reportedly being developed at Netflix.

A writers’ room was opened toward the end of 2025, and by August 2026 the production had begun meeting with potential directors.

Netflix nevertheless avoided publicly confirming the project until its carefully selected 8/28 announcement.

With the series now officially ordered, casting and production details should become clearer as development progresses.

No premiere date has yet been announced.

Could Original Manifest Characters Return?

That’s likely to become one of the biggest questions surrounding Arrivals.

Netflix’s announcement emphasizes new characters and new storylines, which strongly suggests the new arrivals will dominate the series.

But nothing announced so far explicitly rules out connections to the original cast.

Rake’s promise that the series will reward longtime Manifest viewers naturally leaves room for speculation about familiar characters, locations or mythology.

At present, however, there is no confirmed return for Josh Dallas as Ben Stone, Melissa Roxburgh as Michaela Stone or any other member of the original ensemble.

The safest expectation is therefore exactly what Netflix has announced: a new mystery inside the same universe.

Anything beyond that remains unconfirmed.

A Familiar Formula With Much Bigger Stakes

The cleverest part of Arrivals may be how closely its setup resembles Manifest without simply repeating Flight 828.

Once again, an aircraft arrives under impossible circumstances.

Once again, the passengers cannot explain what has happened to them.

And once again, a seemingly isolated aviation mystery appears connected to something capable of affecting far more than the people aboard the plane.

But there is one major difference.

Flight 828 passengers knew who they were.

The people emerging from the aircraft in Arrivals apparently don’t.

That changes the entire nature of the mystery.

Before investigators can determine where the passengers have been, they may first need to establish who those passengers even are.

And while they search for answers, the threat of a humanity-ending catastrophe is already hanging over them.

That gives Arrivals an enormous mystery from its opening episode — while preserving the central question that made Manifest so addictive in the first place:

How can a plane land when everything about its arrival appears impossible?

Manifest Is Taking Flight Again

Netflix could have simply left Manifest where its emotional 2023 finale ended.

Instead, the streamer is betting that the universe surrounding Flight 828 still has mysteries worth exploring.

Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery won’t erase that ending or reopen the same story.

It begins with another plane.

Another group of people who shouldn’t be where they are.

Another seemingly impossible event.

And this time, those passengers don’t even remember their own names.

With Jeff Rake, Margaret Easley and Laura Putney back behind the series, Netflix is preserving the creative team responsible for the original while deliberately opening the door to a new audience.

Three years after Manifest ended, its most enduring idea is taking flight again: when an impossible plane arrives, the biggest mystery isn’t simply where it came from.
