Netflix’s East of Eden Opens With 6.5 Million Views, Sending Steinbeck Classic Back Up The Charts

Netflix’s lavish new adaptation of East of Eden has made an immediate impact, debuting at No. 1 on the streamer’s English-language TV chart with 6.5 million views in its opening four days.

The seven-episode limited series, which arrived on Netflix on October 1, brings John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel to the screen with Florence Pugh at the center of a sprawling family saga.

The opening numbers also appear to have given Steinbeck’s original novel a fresh boost, with East of Eden returning to the top of book charts following the series premiere.

Florence Pugh Leads A New Take On Steinbeck’s Classic

Created and adapted by Zoe Kazan, the series takes one of American literature’s most famous family stories and places Cathy Ames firmly at its center.

Pugh plays Cathy, the enigmatic and fiercely independent woman whose arrival becomes intertwined with the lives of the Trask family. Her story brings her into the orbit of brothers Adam and Charles Trask, played by Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist, as the family navigates love, rivalry, ambition and the darker side of the California dream.

The story stretches across generations, exploring how choices, family relationships and personal conflicts can continue to shape the people who come after them.

Netflix describes the series as taking place in the early 1900s, with Cathy’s presence driving a rift between two brothers and setting a much larger family saga into motion.

A Seven-Episode Family Saga

While Steinbeck’s novel has been adapted before, Kazan’s version takes a more expansive approach to the material.

The series follows the Trask and Hamilton families as they settle in California’s Salinas Valley, moving across generations while examining the tensions between good and evil that sit at the heart of the original story.

The supporting cast includes Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Hoon Lee as Lee, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal Trask and Joe Anders as Aron Trask. Garth Davis directed the first four episodes, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed the final three.

Kazan also serves as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart.

Cathy Ames Takes Center Stage

One of the biggest changes in this adaptation is the emphasis placed on Cathy.

Rather than treating her simply as a mysterious or destructive figure, the series spends more time exploring the character’s background and motivations. Netflix’s Tudum describes the adaptation as following Cathy from her vulnerable girlhood through her transformation into an independent woman.

That approach also gives Pugh a particularly demanding role, as the story follows Cathy across decades rather than focusing on a single period of her life.

The actor has previously taken on complex and morally difficult characters, but East of Eden gives her the opportunity to chart one character through multiple stages of her life while remaining at the heart of the story.

Kazan has also emphasized the importance of staying rooted in Steinbeck’s original material while finding a contemporary way into the story.

The series retains the novel’s central questions about morality, family and the choices people make, while giving greater attention to Cathy and the women surrounding the Trask family.

The project also carries an unusual family connection for Kazan. Her grandfather, Oscar-winning filmmaker Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden, which starred James Dean.

The newer series, however, takes a much broader approach, using all seven episodes to explore the epic scope of Steinbeck’s novel.

Filmed Far From California

Despite being one of the defining novels of California literature, the series was not filmed in the Salinas Valley.

Production moved more than 6,000 miles away to New Zealand, where the cast and crew recreated the landscapes and period settings needed for the story.

That production scale helps give the series the sweeping period-drama feel expected from a story that spans generations.

Netflix Viewers Are Already Showing Up

East of Eden opened with 6.5 million views during the week of September 28 through October 4, placing it at No. 1 on Netflix’s global English-language TV chart.

The result puts the series ahead of Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, which recorded 5.7 million views during the same period, while A Different World followed with 5.1 million.

More significantly for Netflix and Steinbeck fans, the adaptation has already helped drive renewed interest in the source material, with the beloved novel climbing back up the book charts after the series arrived.

With all seven episodes now available to stream, East of Eden has given a classic American family saga a new screen life — and Florence Pugh’s interpretation of Cathy Ames is at the center of it.
