The 1% Club’s 40% Letters Question Stumps Seven Players — Could You Solve It In 30 Seconds?
A deceptively simple question about letters left seven contestants eliminated from The 1% Club after they failed to find the answer within just 30 seconds.
The tricky challenge appeared during season two of Lee Mack’s ITV quiz show, where contestants are tested not on traditional general knowledge, but on logic, reasoning and common sense.
Unlike conventional quiz formats, The 1% Club begins with 100 players who are gradually eliminated as the questions become harder. The ultimate goal is to reach the final question, which only one per cent of the public is expected to answer correctly.
Each question is assigned a percentage based on its difficulty, with a higher percentage indicating an easier challenge.
This particular puzzle was rated at 40%, meaning just under half of the public were expected to answer it correctly.

Could You Spot The Hidden Pattern?
Lee Mack presented the contestants with a question that sounded straightforward:
“What letter appears most often in this question as the last letter of the words?”
The wording, however, proved far more challenging than it initially appeared.
As the 30-second countdown continued, several contestants appeared increasingly unsure about what they were supposed to be looking for.
Rather than relying on outside knowledge, they had to carefully examine the words in the question itself and work out which letter occurred most frequently at the end of those words.
With the clock running down, Lee even joked that one contestant had “left it to the last second.”

Seven Players Knocked Out

When the 30 seconds were over, the result showed just how difficult the seemingly simple puzzle had been.
Seven players were eliminated from the game after failing to give the correct response in time.
The answer was then revealed to be the letter “S”, which appeared four times as the final letter of words in the question.
The puzzle was another example of the kind of challenge that has become a defining feature of The 1% Club: questions that look simple on the surface but require contestants to slow down, read carefully and think differently.

Other Tricky Questions Have Caused Problems
The letters puzzle was far from the only seemingly easy challenge to cause trouble on the show.
Previous episodes have seen contestants eliminated by questions involving a supposedly straightforward picture of a cat, while a question about the days of the week also left viewers struggling to find the correct solution.
The 1% Club airs on Saturday nights on ITV and is available to stream on ITVX.
