£98,000 Hung On One Number… 😳 Then The Final Four Saw A Question That Made Them Stop Dead.” The Jackpot Was Within Touching Distance. Only Four Contestants Remained, With £98,000 Riding On A Deceptively Simple Question: “What Is The Lowest Number To Have The Same Value As Ten Times The Number Of Letters In Its Name?” It Sounded Straightforward. Until The Contestants Actually Had To Solve It.

The 1% Club viewers baffled by fiendish final question: could you have got it right?

The 1% Club left viewers scratching their heads after a deceptively simple-looking question proved too difficult for many watching at home.

The ITV quiz show, hosted by comedian Lee Mack, challenges 100 contestants with a series of logic and reasoning questions. As the game progresses, the questions become increasingly difficult, with the final 1% question designed to be answered by only a tiny proportion of the UK population.

In the episode broadcast on Saturday, March 22, 2025, just four contestants survived to the final question, with £98,000 at stake.

And all four contestants came up with different answers.

That alone gave viewers an idea of just how tricky the final puzzle had proved to be.

Can you solve The 1% Club question?

Lee presented the final challenge:

“What is the lowest number to have the same value as ten times the number of letters in its name?”

It sounds straightforward, but the wording requires contestants to look at the number and its written name at the same time.

The answer was 50.

The reason is that FIFTY contains five letters. Ten times five is 50, meaning the number 50 has the same value as ten times the number of letters in its name.

The question and answer were also listed in episode guides for Season 4, confirming FIFTY as the solution to the March 22 episode’s 1% question.

Joshua gets the answer and wins £98,000

Of the four contestants left standing, Joshua was the one who correctly spotted the connection.

He appeared visibly shocked when the answer was revealed, but his correct response secured the £98,000 jackpot.

Lee then asked him how he was feeling after getting through the final question.

Joshua replied: “I’m a wreck!”

His reaction captured the tension of the moment, particularly given that the other three finalists had all arrived at different answers.

Viewers admit they were completely stumped

The difficult question quickly became a talking point among viewers, with several admitting they would not have been able to solve it.

One viewer wrote that they “wouldn’t have gotten that 1% question in a million years.”

Another admitted they did not understand the question at all, while another said they “never” knew how to answer the show’s 1% questions.

Not everyone was completely defeated, however. One viewer explained that although they had been nowhere near the answer, seeing the solution made the puzzle seem much easier in hindsight.

They added that this was essentially the point of The 1% Club: once the trick is revealed, the solution can suddenly appear obvious.

Others congratulated Joshua on his win, with one viewer describing the final puzzle as a particularly tough question and praising him for solving it.

Why the answer is 50

The key is to turn the wording into a simple equation.

The question asks for a number whose numerical value equals 10 multiplied by the number of letters in its written name.

For 50:

  • 50 is written as FIFTY
  • FIFTY contains 5 letters
  • 5 × 10 = 50

So 50 satisfies the condition.

The trick is that contestants are not simply looking for a number with a particular mathematical property. They have to consider the spelling of the number as well.

That combination of language and arithmetic is exactly what made the question so easy to miss under pressure.
