Angelina Jolie is returning to feature-film directing with Without Blood, an emotionally charged war drama starring Salma Hayek Pinault and Demián Bichir. The film will open in theaters on September 18, with its newly released trailer offering the first major glimpse at a story built around grief, revenge and a confrontation years in the making.

Written and directed by Jolie, Without Blood is adapted from Alessandro Baricco’s bestselling novel. It marks Jolie’s sixth feature as a director and her first since 2017’s First They Killed My Father.

At the center of the story is Nina, played by Hayek Pinault, a woman whose family was killed during a devastating war. Years later, still searching for answers, she tracks down Tito, portrayed by Bichir — the man she believes may know the truth about their deaths.

The trailer places their face-to-face encounter at the heart of the film, gradually revealing the painful history connecting them.

“How can God forgive you?” Nina asks Tito at one point. She later declares: “Revenge is the drug that allows us to fight.”

Rather than relying heavily on action, Without Blood appears to focus on the psychological consequences of violence and the emotional reckoning between two people carrying the weight of the past.

Hayek Pinault has previously admitted that she was reluctant to accept the role because of the emotional territory it required her to explore.

“I didn’t want to do the movie. I didn’t want to be Nina,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I didn’t want to go to the places that she’s been, emotionally.”

The actress explained that playing Nina demanded constant emotional concentration because the film offered few opportunities for a performer to hide behind action or spectacle.

“You have to be at the edge every single day, every single hour of the day while you’re playing this character,” she said. “And there’s nowhere to hide.”

With relatively little physical action driving the scenes, Hayek Pinault said even a brief lapse in emotional engagement would become immediately noticeable.

It ultimately took a series of lengthy conversations with Jolie to persuade Hayek Pinault to accept the part.

The experience appears to have justified that decision. Hayek Pinault later described Jolie as “the best actors’ director I’ve ever worked with” and said she had never felt so valued while working on a project.

Their collaboration places the relationship between Nina and Tito at the center of Without Blood, with the trailer suggesting their seemingly simple meeting will gradually expose the consequences of a violent past and Nina’s years-long pursuit of answers.

With Jolie behind the camera and Hayek Pinault and Bichir carrying the central confrontation, Without Blood arrives in theaters on September 18.
