Netflix’s Seven-Episode East Of Eden Adaptation Is Bringing Florence Pugh To One Of Literature’s Most Iconic Roles — And The Entire Epic Family Saga Arrives In One Day! Pugh leads as the complicated Cathy Ames alongside Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist, as John Steinbeck’s classic story of family, rivalry, love and betrayal unfolds across generations. The adaptation also carries a remarkable family connection: showrunner Zoe Kazan’s grandfather directed the celebrated 1955 film starring James Dean.

Netflix Sets October Premiere for East of Eden as Florence Pugh Takes on One of Literature’s Most Complicated Antiheroes

More than seven decades after John Steinbeck’s East of Eden first reached the big screen, the sweeping family saga is being reimagined for television. Netflix’s new seven-part limited series will premiere on October 1, with all episodes arriving at once and Florence Pugh leading the cast as Cathy Ames.

Netflix unveiled the first images from the adaptation on August 18, offering an early look at Cathy and the complicated relationships that connect her to brothers Adam and Charles Trask.

Florence Pugh leads an impressive cast

Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, the cunning and deeply complex antihero at the heart of Steinbeck’s story. She also serves as an executive producer.

Writer and showrunner Zoe Kazan said Pugh was always her clear choice for the character.

“I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good,” Kazan told Tudum. “She is the exact right person to play Cathy.”

Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask, Cathy’s husband, while Mike Faist portrays Adam’s half-brother Charles.

One newly released image captures Cathy and Adam posing for a wedding portrait alongside Charles. While Adam looks straight toward the camera, Cathy turns her attention toward Charles, hinting at the complicated dynamics ahead.

Kazan has noted that Abbott and Faist could almost have exchanged characters, reflecting the parallels she wanted to establish between the brothers.

The ensemble also features Hoon Lee as Lee, Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joe Anders as Aron Trask and Joseph Zada as Caleb “Cal” Trask.

What is East of Eden about?

Netflix describes the adaptation as a modern interpretation of Steinbeck’s masterpiece, exploring the multigenerational history of the Trask family while placing greater emphasis on Cathy Ames.

Inspired by the biblical story of Cain and Abel, East of Eden examines sibling rivalry, rejection, resentment and the complicated legacies passed between generations.

Adam marries Cathy, and the couple eventually move to California, where she gives birth to twin sons Cal and Aron. Shortly after their birth, Cathy abandons the family. The story later moves forward to follow the twins as they grow older and confront struggles of their own.

Zoe Kazan has a personal connection to the story

For Kazan, adapting East of Eden also carries a significant family connection.

Her grandfather, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Elia Kazan, directed the famous 1955 movie adaptation starring James Dean.

However, Zoe Kazan is taking a different approach. She has pointed out that her grandfather’s film adapted only a relatively small portion of Steinbeck’s novel.

Rather than concentrating on that same section, the Netflix series gives her seven episodes to explore the broader scope of the novel and spend more time with its many characters.

“What I felt was the whole epic story is an opportunity to explore, to fall in love with all these characters,” she explained.

With Pugh at the center of an extensive ensemble and the complete seven-episode story arriving simultaneously, Netflix’s new interpretation aims to bring the full scale of Steinbeck’s multigenerational saga to a new audience.

East of Eden premieres October 1 on Netflix, with all seven episodes available on release day.
