Riley Green Breaks His Own Rule as 19-Year-Old Harmony McKee Joins Team Riley

Riley Green entered Season 30 of The Voice with a straightforward strategy: build a team around country music and give a country artist a shot at winning the competition.

Then Harmony McKee walked onto the stage.

The 19-year-old Tennessee singer had never performed a country song before, yet she chose Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead” for her Blind Audition. Her performance turned the chairs of both Green and Adam Levine — and suddenly, Green found himself competing for an artist whose musical background was far removed from traditional country.

When McKee ultimately chose Team Riley, Green’s carefully defined country-first strategy took an unexpected turn.

The second night of Season 30’s Blind Auditions aired Tuesday, September 22, with Green, Levine, Kelly Clarkson and Queen Latifah continuing to build their teams.

Riley Green Had Country Music in Mind

Green made his coaching debut during the Season 30 premiere on September 21 and quickly established what he wanted from his team.

His first additions fit that vision. Sister duo Ferryn and Brinkley from Sevierville, Tennessee, became the season’s first four-chair turn before choosing Green as their coach. He also landed 19-year-old Joe Henley, an Alabama singer who had never performed a professional gig before appearing on the show.

Green had already explained that he wanted to bring country singers onto his team, believing the genre had a strong chance of producing the season’s eventual winner.

That made Harmony McKee’s audition an especially interesting development.

Harmony McKee Takes a Risk With Miranda Lambert

McKee came into the competition from a very different musical background.

The 19-year-old Tennessee singer usually performs R&B and soul, along with music influenced by bluesy rock. Before The Voice, she had never performed a country song.

For her Blind Audition, however, she decided to take a chance on Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead.”

It was an ambitious choice for a first attempt at the genre, but McKee committed fully to the performance. Her delivery was strong enough to make both Green and Levine turn their chairs.

The surprise came when McKee revealed that it was actually her first time singing country music.

That immediately changed the dynamic between the two coaches competing for her.

Adam Levine Sees His Opportunity

Levine was visibly excited when he learned about McKee’s usual musical style.

Rather than viewing her lack of country experience as a weakness, he saw it as an opening. McKee’s background in R&B and soul gave him a way to argue that she could explore a wider range of music with him.

Green, meanwhile, had a more personal connection to McKee.

The two bonded over their shared appreciation for Johnny Cash, a connection they traced back to their grandfathers. Green also compared McKee’s blues influence to that of Chris Stapleton, pointing to the way country music can incorporate elements from other genres.

Kelly Clarkson also weighed in during the coaching battle, highlighting the fact that McKee did not sound like the other artists already on Green’s team.

That difference, she suggested, could ultimately help McKee stand out.

McKee Chooses Team Riley

After hearing the coaches’ pitches, McKee had the final say — and she chose Green.

Her decision added another distinctive voice to Team Riley, even though her musical roots did not initially fit the country-heavy direction Green had described at the beginning of the season.

Green was thrilled to have her.

“I’m so happy I got Harmony. She really made that song her own. The way she took over the stage. She’ll definitely be a big star,” Green said.

McKee was equally enthusiastic about the opportunity. After making her choice, she said she was excited to continue her journey on The Voice and described working with Green as a particularly valuable opportunity because he is already working professionally in the music industry.

Team Riley Gets More Diverse

 

By the end of the second night of Blind Auditions, Green’s team included Joe Henley, Ferryn & Brinkley, Caroline Alexis and Harmony McKee.

McKee’s addition gives the team a noticeably different musical perspective.

She had never sung country before The Voice, but her first attempt at the genre was enough to earn two chair turns and ultimately convince Green that she belonged on his team.

Her story also shows how quickly a coach’s original strategy can change once the right artist comes along.

Green entered Season 30 intending to emphasize country music. But when a 19-year-old R&B and soul singer stepped onto the stage, delivered a Miranda Lambert classic and showed that she could make it her own, he made room for a voice that did not fit neatly into his original plan.

More Team-Building Drama on Night Two

McKee was not the only notable development during the September 22 episode.

Kelly Clarkson used her First-In button to secure Johnnie Kapua, preventing the other coaches from competing for him. The night then ended with 23-year-old Lexi Stephens delivering a four-chair turn with her performance of “Die on This Hill.” Her coach choice was held over for the following episode, creating a cliffhanger heading into the third night of Blind Auditions.

For Green, though, the major surprise had already been settled.

The coach who arrived with a clear vision for a country-focused team had just added an artist whose musical roots lie in R&B, soul and bluesy rock.

Harmony McKee is now officially part of Team Riley — and her unexpected leap into country music has given Green another artist to develop as Season 30 moves forward.
