Below: Josh Hartnett and Charlie Heaton Lead Netflix’s Mysterious Newfoundland Thriller

Something is lurking beneath the water in Netflix’s upcoming thriller Below, and the newly released trailer raises more questions than it answers.
The six-episode limited series stars Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton in a tense story set in a small Newfoundland community, where an unidentified sea creature begins threatening the town.
Netflix released the official trailer on September 10, offering the first real glimpse at the mystery surrounding the isolated community — and suggesting that whatever has emerged from the ocean may be connected to secrets buried much deeper than anyone realizes.

An enormous iceberg appears offshore, with one character warning that it is “not [their] friend.” The danger is clear enough that the locals are told to stay away from the ice.
Then something happens to Wade Penney, played by Charlie Heaton. He struggles to explain what he has experienced, while his father, Calvin Penney, begins to realize that the water he has known all his life may be far more dangerous than he ever imagined.
“I spent my whole life on the water. I thought I understood it,” Calvin says in the trailer.
But clearly, he doesn’t.
When does Below premiere?

Below will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
The limited series consists of six episodes and was filmed on location in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.
Who stars in Below?

Josh Hartnett leads the cast as Calvin Penney, a Newfoundland fisherman whose family becomes caught at the center of the mystery.
Charlie Heaton plays his son, Wade Penney, while Mackenzie Davis stars as Fonda Howander, a visiting marine researcher who joins Calvin in trying to understand what is happening.
The cast also includes Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Kaleb Horn as Noah, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney and Willow Kean as Ruth Penney.
The series was created by Jesse McKeown, who also serves as showrunner. He executive produces alongside Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Josh Hartnett, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton and Sharon Hall.
What is Below about?

According to Netflix, the story centers on Calvin Penney, a big-hearted but stubborn fisherman living in a close-knit Newfoundland town.
Calvin has never fully escaped the mystery surrounding his father’s death decades earlier. His life takes another dangerous turn when an unidentified creature from the sea begins terrorizing the community.
With his family and neighbors under threat, Calvin becomes determined to protect his son Wade and the people around him. He teams up with Fonda, a marine researcher visiting the area, as they attempt to confront the creature and uncover the secrets hidden beneath the island’s history.
The series combines local mythology, suspense and humor while exploring themes of family, community and change.
At the center of it all is Calvin’s attempt to understand a threat that seems connected not only to the water surrounding his home, but also to mysteries that have remained unresolved for years.
The trailer hints at a much bigger mystery

The first trailer deliberately keeps many of the answers hidden.
The strange iceberg, Wade’s unexplained experience and Calvin’s growing fear all point toward something unusual happening in the waters surrounding the town.
Rather than simply presenting a creature-feature story, Below appears to place the supernatural mystery alongside the relationships within Calvin’s family and the wider community.
With six episodes to unravel the mystery, the series promises to combine the dangers beneath the ocean with a more personal story about a father determined to keep his family safe.
Below premieres Thursday, October 8, 2026, on Netflix.
