Henry Cavill’s 2026 Action Thriller Finds a Second Life on Streaming After Disappointing Box Office Run
Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey struggled to find an audience in theaters, but the star-packed action thriller has enjoyed a striking reversal of fortune since moving into the home-viewing market.
Led by Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, the film has climbed streaming and digital charts months after its theatrical debut, including reaching No. 5 on Prime Video’s global chart in data reported by FlixPatrol. It also appeared among the leading titles on the Apple TV Store, giving a movie that stumbled at the box office a considerably stronger second chapter.
It is the kind of turnaround that has become increasingly familiar in the streaming era: a film can disappoint during its theatrical window, only to connect with a much wider audience once viewers can watch it at home.

Guy Ritchie Brings Cavill and Gyllenhaal Together
In the Grey was written and directed by Guy Ritchie, continuing his long association with stylish crime stories, elaborate schemes and fast-moving action.
The filmmaker established himself with movies including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, before reaching an even broader audience through the Robert Downey Jr.-led Sherlock Holmes films.
For In the Grey, Ritchie assembled an unusually recognizable cast.
Cavill stars as Sid alongside Gyllenhaal as Bronco and González as Rachel. Rosamund Pike, Kristofer Hivju, Fisher Stevens and Carlos Bardem are also among the ensemble.
The project also reunited Ritchie with two actors with whom he had recently worked.
Cavill starred in Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, while Gyllenhaal led the director’s The Covenant.
This time, the pair were placed on the same team.
An Impossible Mission to Recover a Billion-Dollar Fortune
At the center of In the Grey is a covert team accustomed to operating outside conventional boundaries.
When a ruthless despot steals a billion-dollar fortune, the operatives are sent to recover it. What begins as an already dangerous heist escalates into a much larger battle involving strategy, deception and survival.
The setup gives Ritchie plenty of room to work within familiar territory: highly capable characters, elaborate planning, international locations and a mission that becomes increasingly complicated as it unfolds.
Gyllenhaal and Cavill provide the muscle and tactical expertise as Bronco and Sid, while González’s Rachel occupies another central position within the team.
The result is a 97-minute action thriller built around the chemistry of its leading trio and Ritchie’s recognizable approach to crime and action filmmaking.
In the Grey Had a Difficult Road to Theaters
The movie’s eventual release followed a complicated journey.
In the Grey had originally been scheduled to arrive much earlier, but its theatrical plans changed repeatedly. Lionsgate initially held U.S. distribution rights and had scheduled the film for January 17, 2025.
That release was removed from the calendar when the movie was not ready in time.
The film subsequently went through further distribution changes before Black Bear ultimately handled its U.S. theatrical release. In the Grey finally opened widely in American theaters on May 15, 2026.
For a movie featuring Cavill, Gyllenhaal and González under Ritchie’s direction, expectations were understandably significant.
Its theatrical performance, however, did not match the pedigree of the talent involved.
The original report described In the Grey as a box-office disappointment, citing approximately $13 million in earnings against an estimated $70 million budget.
But the response from people who actually watched the film told a somewhat different story.
Critics and Audiences Did Not See the Same Movie

The movie proved divisive upon release.
According to the figures cited in the original report, critics gave In the Grey a 47% Rotten Tomatoes score, while its audience score stood much higher at 83% at that time.
That gap suggested that the slick action thriller was connecting more enthusiastically with general viewers than with professional reviewers.
Current platform data similarly points to a respectable response from home audiences. Prime Video lists the film with a 4.2-out-of-5 customer rating, while IMDb currently has it at 6.3/10.
And once the film left theaters, those viewers suddenly became much easier to reach.
Streaming Changed the Story
Following its theatrical run, In the Grey moved quickly into digital availability, with Rotten Tomatoes listing its streaming release as June 2, 2026.
That transition proved important.
Rather than disappearing after its disappointing box-office performance, Ritchie’s film began finding an audience through digital rental, purchase and streaming platforms.
FlixPatrol data showed the movie climbing to No. 5 on Prime Video’s global Top 10, putting it in competition with newer and heavily promoted releases.
The tracking service also recorded sustained Top 10 activity across multiple digital platforms. As of its August 27 update, In the Grey had spent 26 days in Prime Video Top 10 charts and had also appeared extensively on Apple TV Store, Amazon and Google charts.
That is a substantial change from the narrative surrounding the movie after its theatrical release.
Henry Cavill’s Thriller Finds the Audience It Missed in Theaters
The streaming numbers do not erase In the Grey’s theatrical disappointment, but they demonstrate how dramatically a film’s fortunes can change once the barrier of a cinema ticket is removed.
At home, viewers appear more willing to take a chance on the simple promise offered by Ritchie’s movie: Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González carrying out an increasingly dangerous billion-dollar mission.
Prime Video currently offers the film through its platform, while it is also available digitally through Apple TV.
FlixPatrol’s chart history further suggests that this has not been merely a one-day spike. The movie has continued appearing across international platform rankings well after its theatrical debut.
For Ritchie and his A-list cast, that gives In the Grey something it seemed unlikely to receive after its troubled production history and underwhelming theatrical run: a genuine second chance with audiences.
The action thriller may not have conquered the box office, but months later, Cavill, Gyllenhaal and González have found themselves at the center of one of streaming’s more notable comeback stories.
