Netflix’s The Whisper Man, adapted from Alex North’s bestselling novel, has arrived with a chilling premise and a cast packed with major Hollywood names, including Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Keaton and Hamish Linklater.

The story unfolds 10 years after the infamous Whisper Man was captured. When children begin disappearing again, the retired detective responsible for solving the original case is pulled back into the nightmare.

This time, however, the investigation is painfully personal.

His own grandson is missing.

Robert De Niro as Pete Willis

Robert De Niro leads the cast as Detective Pete Willis, the man responsible for catching the original Whisper Man.

Pete has since retired, seemingly leaving the horrifying case behind him. But that changes when his grandson disappears.

Suddenly, the investigation that defined his career becomes a desperate race to save someone he loves.

The case also forces Pete back into contact with the original killer, who remains incarcerated in a high-security prison.

Whether the imprisoned murderer can provide the information Pete needs — and what he may demand in return — becomes one of the disturbing questions hanging over the story.

De Niro brings decades of screen history to the role.

The two-time Oscar winner’s career includes landmark films such as The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino and Heat. More recently, he appeared in Joker.

His presence gives The Whisper Man considerable dramatic weight, particularly as Pete is forced to revisit a case he believed had ended years earlier.

Adam Scott as Tom Kennedy

Severance star Adam Scott plays Tom Kennedy, a widowed writer whose son becomes caught at the center of the nightmare.

Tom has been estranged from his father, Pete, for several years.

The disappearance of his son changes everything.

Whatever unresolved problems exist between father and son suddenly become secondary as Tom turns to Pete for help.

That family tension gives the mystery another emotional dimension. Pete isn’t simply returning to police work — he is being pulled back into the life of a son from whom he has become distant while trying to rescue his grandson.

Scott is widely known for playing Ben Wyatt in the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation.

He later found another major television role as Mark Scout in Apple TV’s acclaimed mystery drama Severance.

The Whisper Man places him in considerably darker territory, with Tom confronting both the disappearance of his child and his complicated relationship with Pete.

Michelle Monaghan as Detective Amanda Beck

Michelle Monaghan stars as Detective Amanda Beck, the investigator currently responsible for the Whisper Man case.

Unlike Pete, Amanda isn’t returning to an old nightmare.

She is dealing with its apparent resurgence.

As children begin disappearing, she becomes determined to identify whoever is responsible — regardless of whether Pete is willing to cooperate.

That puts two generations of investigators around the same mystery: the detective who solved the original case and the detective tasked with determining why something so similar appears to be happening again.

Monaghan has appeared in numerous major films and television projects, including Gone Baby Gone, Made of Honor, Patriots Day, Mission: Impossible III and True Detective.

Michael Keaton as Frank Carter

Michael Keaton takes on one of the thriller’s most unsettling roles as Frank Carter, the original Whisper Man.

Carter remains imprisoned in a high-security facility after being captured by Pete a decade earlier.

But even from behind bars, his presence hangs over the new investigation.

Pete is reportedly the only person Carter will speak to, making their relationship potentially crucial once another child disappears.

The situation becomes even more disturbing when Carter receives what is described as a “chilling proposition” that captures his attention.

Exactly how much the imprisoned killer knows — and whether the new disappearances are connected to him — sits at the heart of the mystery.

Keaton brings an extensive film career to the role, having starred in Batman, Batman Returns, Beetlejuice, Birdman and Spider-Man: Homecoming, among many other projects.

Hamish Linklater as Norman Collins

Hamish Linklater plays Norman Collins, a character whose unusual obsession immediately attracts suspicion.

Norman is described as a “crime junkie” whose home is filled with artifacts connected to murder.

Unsurprisingly, that makes him someone investigators cannot easily ignore when children begin disappearing.

Whether his fascination with violent crime makes him dangerous or simply suspicious is another question the investigation must untangle.

Linklater will already be familiar to many Netflix viewers following his acclaimed appearance in Midnight Mass.

His other credits include Legion, The New Adventures of Old Christine, The Crazy Ones, Gen V, Manhunt, American Horror Story and Widow’s Bay.

The supporting cast expands the mystery

Several other characters become involved as the investigation develops.

Will Brill plays Sergeant John Dyson, while Owen Teague portrays Frank Carter Jr.

Acston Luca Porto appears as Jake Kennedy, Tom’s young son and Pete’s grandson, whose disappearance pulls the fractured Kennedy family into the center of the case.

Together, the characters form a story that is as much about family relationships and old wounds as it is about uncovering the truth behind a new series of disappearances.
