David Tennant Takes On A Dark New Role In BBC Crime Drama Time Season 3
David Tennant is trading the TARDIS for the prison system in the third season of BBC crime anthology Time, taking on one of the more morally complicated roles of his career.
The Doctor Who star plays Bobby Bailey, a Custodial Manager at a young offender institution, where he is responsible for overseeing teenage prisoners as they begin their sentences.
The newly released trailer offers a first glimpse of Tennant in the role, and Bailey is a long way from the Doctor. He is not portrayed as an obvious villain, but his position puts him in the middle of difficult decisions, institutional pressure and a troubling incident that forces him to confront the consequences of his responsibilities.
David Tennant Steps Inside The World Of Time
Season 3 marks Tennant’s debut in the Time anthology, with the actor playing a prison official working closely with young offenders.
The trailer introduces Bailey as he supervises teenagers entering the institution, while also showing how their imprisonment affects the people waiting for them outside.
But Bailey is carrying a difficult secret of his own.
He is confronted with the truth surrounding a tragic incident inside the prison, leaving him caught between his professional obligations and the moral consequences of what he knows.
That conflict brings him into opposition with Prison Chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell, played by Siobhan Finneran.
Rather than presenting Bailey as a conventional antagonist, the series appears to place him in a much more uncomfortable position: a man expected to maintain order while dealing with information that could have serious consequences.

Another Dark Turn For David Tennant
Tennant may be best known for playing the Doctor, but his career has repeatedly taken him into much darker territory.
He played the disturbing Kilgrave in Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, two characters who allowed him to show a very different side of his acting range.
He has also played morally complex figures rather than outright villains, most notably DI Alec Hardy in Broadchurch, which ran for three seasons.
Bobby Bailey occupies yet another space.
He is not defined simply by cruelty or villainy. Instead, his authority inside a young offenders’ institution forces him to make difficult decisions while attempting to reconcile the rules of his job with what he believes is right.
That tension is likely to be central to Tennant’s performance throughout the new season.
What Is Time Season 3 About?
Since launching in 2021, Time has told a different prison story in each season, focusing on both inmates and the people who work inside the system.
The anthology currently holds a 96% critics’ score and an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The first season followed Sean Cobden, a former teacher serving a prison sentence played by Sean Bean, alongside prison officer Eric McNally, played by Stephen Graham.
Season 2 moved the story into a women’s prison, with Jodie Whittaker, Bella Ramsey and Tamara Lawrence leading the cast.
The third season returns to a young offenders’ institution, placing Tennant at the centre of a story about authority, responsibility and the effects of imprisonment on young people and their families.
Tennant is also the second Doctor Who star to appear in the anthology, following Whittaker’s role in Season 2.
Finneran’s Marie-Louise O’Dell is the only actor to have appeared across all three seasons, continuing her role as the prison chaplain.
The new cast also includes Daniel Ryan as Custodial Manager Freddie Jennings, while Louis McCartney, Ollie McNulty and Chukwubuikem Molokwu play teenage offenders James, Peter and Christopher.
A Story About The Cost Of Incarceration
The central conflict of Season 3 goes beyond what happens inside the prison walls.
Bailey’s struggle over the aftermath of the tragic incident will unfold alongside the experiences of the young offenders and the families affected by their imprisonment.
That approach continues the broader focus of Time: examining incarceration not simply through the people serving sentences, but through the staff, families and communities caught up in the consequences.
The anthology has also received major industry recognition, winning multiple BAFTA Awards, including Best Mini-Series. Sean Bean won Best Actor for Season 1, while Stephen Graham received a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
When Does Time Season 3 Premiere?
The third season will once again run for three episodes.
The opening episode premieres on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on October 11, followed by Episode 2 on October 12. The third and final episode will arrive on October 18.
With Tennant playing a prison official caught between authority and conscience, Time Season 3 looks set to continue the anthology’s focus on the human consequences of incarceration — this time through the particularly difficult world of young offenders.
