Lanterns Episode 2 Reveals John Stewart’s Extraordinary Power as a Terrifying Manhunter Threat Emerges in Rushville

Lanterns deepens its central mystery in Episode 2, “Trust Fall,” revealing that John Stewart may possess Green Lantern abilities far beyond anything Hal Jordan expected — while introducing a threat capable of putting half of Nebraska in danger.

Following Episode 1’s shocking revelation that Hal Jordan’s body is discovered in Rushville, Nebraska, in 2026, the story returns to 2016 to explore what happened between Hal and his former trainee John during the years leading up to his death.

And the deeper they dig into Rushville, the stranger the town becomes.

John Stewart Does Something That Should Be Almost Impossible

John finally receives a flying lesson from Hal, but the training session quickly produces something neither man anticipated.

John manifests a small green bird — and it appears to be alive and sentient.

Hal is immediately fascinated, particularly because John’s Green Lantern ring isn’t even charged. He tells John they need to retrieve the lantern while instructing him to keep the mysterious bird alive.

The discovery becomes increasingly significant as the episode progresses. Creating a living manifestation and sustaining it requires extraordinarily advanced Green Lantern abilities, yet John appears capable of doing it almost instinctively.

More importantly, Hal chooses not to tell the Guardians what his trainee can do.

Rushville Wants the Green Lanterns Gone

Meanwhile, Hal discovers that his presence in Rushville is causing considerable tension.

The townspeople gather to discuss the situation, with the prevailing sentiment clear: they want the Green Lanterns to leave.

Hal later takes John to his enormous but strangely empty mansion, supposedly given to him by a wealthy benefactor. Inside, John discovers Hal’s collection of Green Lantern uniforms as they search for the box containing his lantern.

Its clue, “Mogo doesn’t socialize,” references Mogo, the sentient planet and Green Lantern.

John also encounters another unusual resident of Hal’s home: Earl Jordan, a half-sentient, man-eating plant whose prepared meals are stored in the freezer.

But when John ventures outside, the situation suddenly becomes much more dangerous.

He is abducted.

A Surviving Manhunter May Be Hiding in Rushville

John’s captors are a group of aliens led by Antaan.

They initially believe John is close enough to Hal to provide valuable information, but their real concern is the Manhunters.

Antaan explains that Manhunters can disguise themselves as other species and adopt their technology. Their history is also horrifying, marked by genocide on such a scale that the Green Lanterns eventually intervened.

To make John understand the danger, the aliens inject him with memories showing a Manhunter wiping out an entire population.

But according to Antaan, the threat isn’t confined to history.

He believes one Manhunter survived — and is now hiding somewhere in Rushville.

Nobody knows what form it has taken. It could potentially be anyone or anything.

John is given just 48 hours to identify it. If he fails, Antaan’s people are prepared to take extreme action themselves, even if that means destroying half of Nebraska.

Hal Begins Investigating Rushville’s Alien Technology

While John is learning about the Manhunter threat, Hal is conducting his own investigation.

He removes several bodies from the morgue and runs them through technology designed to detect aliens.

Kerry warns him against taking the bodies to William Macon’s ranch, but Hal ignores her.

Arriving with four bodies in his vehicle, Hal confronts William about the strange technology appearing around Rushville. William insists he believes the area was previously colonized by aliens and has no intention of being caught unprepared again.

He reveals that the alien-detection technology used at the stadium came from an unidentified benefactor.

That immediately raises another question for Hal: what other alien technology might William have hidden on his property?

His investigation ends painfully when Hal is shot for trespassing.

Something Is Deeply Wrong With Rushville

Hal wakes up in Rushville Hospital, where his confrontation with Kerry exposes another layer of tension.

She questions him about Sinestro, and Hal explains that his former mentor attempted a coup before Hal brought him down.

But Kerry has problems closer to home.

She accuses Hal of repeatedly undermining her authority and strengthening the perception that William Macon is the person who really controls Rushville.

“This is my town,” she tells him, warning that something dangerous appears to be developing.

Hal then notices something deeply unsettling about the hospital.

It is virtually empty.

There are no patients or visitors, everything looks suspiciously new, and the entire facility feels wrong.

The episode also reveals that Kerry originally came from Gotham, making her another outsider in Rushville.

John Finally Tells Hal Everything

After Hal encounters Zoe Macon, he returns to the motel and finally charges his ring while reciting the Green Lantern oath.

John then reveals everything that happened during his abduction.

According to Antaan’s group, the Guardians brought the surviving Manhunter to Earth, and it is now hiding somewhere in Rushville. Because the aliens themselves cannot enter the town without detection, they need John to find it.

Their willingness to destroy a huge section of Nebraska if he fails turns the investigation into a race against time.

Yet the Manhunter isn’t the only mystery Hal needs to solve.

John himself may be just as important.

His ability to create the living green bird without a charged ring suggests there is something extraordinary about his connection to Green Lantern power.

Sinestro’s Warning Changes Everything

The episode closes with Hal suiting up and leaving Earth for Oa.

There he visits his former mentor — and now enemy of the Green Lantern Corps — Sinestro, who is being held prisoner following his attempted coup.

Hal wants information about the Manhunters.

Sinestro, however, seems considerably more interested in something else.

“If one still existed, that would be the second greatest threat you are currently facing,” he tells Hal.

Then comes the line that reframes the entire episode:

“So, why don’t you tell me about John Stewart?”

The implication is impossible to ignore. Whatever is hiding in Rushville may be extraordinarily dangerous, but Sinestro apparently believes John Stewart represents an even greater mystery.

With Hal dead in the 2026 timeline, a Manhunter potentially hiding in plain sight and John’s unexplained abilities beginning to emerge, Episode 2 transforms Lanterns from a murder investigation into something considerably larger.
