Josh Hartnett Battles a Mysterious Sea Creature in Netflix’s Chilling New Six-Part Drama Below

Something dangerous is hiding beneath the waters off Newfoundland, and a fisherman haunted by a decades-old tragedy may be the only person capable of stopping it in Netflix’s new limited series Below.

The newly released trailer introduces Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, a big-hearted but stubborn fisherman living in a close-knit small town. Years after the mysterious death of his father, Calvin is still carrying the weight of what happened.

But the past suddenly becomes impossible to ignore when an unidentified creature emerges from the sea and begins terrorizing his community.

A Fisherman Forced to Confront the Past

As the threat grows, Calvin finds himself fighting on two fronts.

He must help hold together a community being pushed into fear and uncertainty while protecting his own family, including his son Wade, played by Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton.

Searching for answers, Calvin joins forces with visiting marine researcher Fonda Howander, played by Mackenzie Davis.

Together, they attempt to understand what is lurking offshore and stop it before more damage is done. Their investigation also begins uncovering secrets that have remained buried on the island — potentially connecting the present-day crisis with mysteries from Calvin’s past.

Below Mixes Creature Horror With Family Drama

Rather than operating purely as a monster thriller, Below is designed to move across several genres.

The six-part limited series combines suspense and local mythology with humor while exploring broader themes of family, community and change.

At the centre of the story is Calvin’s determination to protect the people closest to him while finally confronting questions surrounding his father’s mysterious death.

The Newfoundland setting also plays an important part in the story, placing the danger inside an isolated community whose relationship with the surrounding sea is suddenly transformed by an unknown threat.

Josh Hartnett Leads the Ensemble Cast

Hartnett leads the series as Calvin Penney, with Mackenzie Davis starring as marine researcher Fonda Howander and Charlie Heaton playing Calvin’s son, Wade.

The cast also includes Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Kaleb Horn as Noah, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney and Willow Kean as Ruth Penney.

The series was created by Jesse McKeown.

Jessica Rhoades, through her company Pacesetter, serves as an executive producer alongside Chris Hatcher, Hartnett, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton and Sharon Hall.

With only six episodes, Below promises a tightly contained mystery built around one increasingly frightening question: what exactly is hiding in the waters off Newfoundland — and how much does Calvin’s family’s past have to do with it?
