Nicola Walker’s ‘Phenomenal’ Disney+ Dark Comedy Alice and Steve Is Officially Returning for Season 2

Nicola Walker fans have another reason to celebrate. The Unforgotten star’s darkly comic Disney+ series Alice and Steve is officially returning for a second season — and its creator has already issued an intriguing warning about what lies ahead.

“No one will be prepared for what happens next,” creator and writer Sophie Goodhart teased as the show’s return was confirmed.

That promise feels particularly significant after a first season built around one extraordinarily uncomfortable situation: what happens when your best friend of 30 years begins a relationship with your 26-year-old daughter?

Alice and Steve’s friendship was pushed to breaking point

Walker stars as Alice opposite Jemaine Clement as Steve, two longtime friends whose seemingly unbreakable bond is thrown into chaos when Steve begins dating Alice’s daughter, Izzy.

For Alice, the relationship creates an almost impossible dilemma. She fears she could lose not only her daughter but also the man who has been one of the closest people in her life for three decades.

Rather than accept the new romance, Alice sets about trying to break the couple apart.

Steve, however, is hardly caught unprepared.

What follows is an escalating battle between the old friends, with their increasingly questionable choices transforming a complicated family situation into an all-out feud.

Season one ultimately leaves Alice and Steve facing a major cliffhanger, with the future of their relationship unresolved.

Disney+ is keeping specific details about the second season firmly under wraps, but Lee Mason, VP, Scripted, Disney+ EMEA, has offered one tantalising indication of what viewers can expect: more “laughs, betrayal, and bad decisions.”

Who could return for Season 2?

Disney+ has yet to announce the complete cast for the new episodes.

However, Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement would naturally be expected to return as Alice and Steve given their central roles in the story.

Joel Fry, known for Cruella, played Alice’s husband Daniel in the first season, while The Tattooist of Auschwitz actress Yali Topol Margalith portrayed her daughter Izzy.

Confirmation of their involvement in Season 2 has not yet been announced.

Walker previously explained that Alice immediately stood apart from many of the women she has portrayed throughout her career.

“I love all of the women I’ve played,” she told HELLO! earlier this year. “Then when Alice came through, I thought, well, I haven’t really played someone like her.”

The quality of Goodhart’s writing was another major attraction.

“The writing is so incredibly good,” Walker said. “It was a bit of a no-brainer actually.”

Alice and Steve produced a sharply divided reaction following its debut.

Some viewers embraced its deliberately uncomfortable premise and dark sense of humour, describing the series as “phenomenal” and “brilliant.”

Critics were considerably more split.

The Guardian awarded the comedy two stars, describing it as “dated and wrong,” while The Telegraph also gave the series two stars and argued that the uncomfortable central relationship was difficult to overlook.

RadioTimes.com responded far more positively, awarding four stars and describing the show as both “poignant and funny.”

HELLO! also praised Walker’s performance, calling her “brilliant” and describing the series as “binge-worthy.”

The contrasting reactions arguably reflect exactly what makes Alice and Steve unusual: its comedy is built around a relationship designed to make viewers uncomfortable, while the characters repeatedly make choices that complicate an already extraordinary situation.

Season 2 promises to push the story even further

With the first season ending on a cliffhanger, the biggest questions surrounding Alice, Steve and Izzy remain deliberately unanswered.

Disney+ has revealed little about where the story will go next, and Goodhart’s declaration that viewers will not be prepared for what happens suggests the series has no intention of becoming more conventional in its second outing.

For Walker fans, that means another chance to see the actress in a role far removed from the serious crime dramas with which many viewers associate her.

Season one of Alice and Steve is currently available to stream on Disney+. A release date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
