Agatha Christie fans are getting a very different kind of mystery adaptation this autumn. BritBox has unveiled the first trailer for Tommy & Tuppence, a six-part drama that brings two of the legendary crime writer’s lesser-known detectives into present-day London.

Rather than revisiting Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, the new series turns its attention to Tommy and Tuppence — a crime-solving partnership whose relationship is every bit as complicated as the mysteries they investigate.

Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan lead the adaptation, which premieres on BritBox on September 15, 2026, a date chosen to coincide with Agatha Christie’s birthday.

Christie’s lesser-known detectives finally step into the spotlight

Tommy and Tuppence made their literary debut more than a century ago in Christie’s 1922 novel The Secret Adversary.

Their adventures occupy a distinctive corner of the author’s work. While Poirot and Miss Marple are primarily associated with traditional murder mysteries, Tommy and Tuppence frequently find themselves caught up in stories involving espionage, adventure and intrigue.

Their personal relationship is equally important.

Across Christie’s novels, readers watch the pair develop from young amateur investigators into an established detective partnership. Their story eventually concludes with 1973’s Postern of Fate, which depicts them later in life.

BritBox’s new interpretation keeps the central partnership but transports the characters into the 21st century.

According to the series synopsis, mystery and romance will become increasingly intertwined as Tommy and Tuppence investigate cases while repeatedly falling in and out of love.

Antonia Thomas becomes a determined modern Tuppence

The Good Doctor star Antonia Thomas takes on the role of Tuppence.

This version of the character is described as energetic and fiercely determined, with little interest in accepting “no” for an answer.

Opposite her is Josh Dylan, known for The Buccaneers and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Dylan plays Tommy as a meticulous and charming crime writer who has lost his enthusiasm for his work. That changes when Tuppence suddenly re-enters his life, drawing him back toward mystery and adventure.

The resulting partnership gives the series two parallel stories to explore: the cases Tommy and Tuppence are attempting to solve and the unresolved feelings between the detectives themselves.

Imelda Staunton joins as the formidable Aunt Ada

The series has also recruited Imelda Staunton for a key supporting role.

The Harry Potter and Paddington actress plays Tommy’s Aunt Ada, a retired private detective with a formidable personality.

Her background adds another investigative connection to Tommy’s world and potentially gives the younger detectives an experienced figure to turn to as their cases unfold.

With Staunton joining Thomas and Dylan, the adaptation combines established British talent with two younger leads tasked with reinventing Christie characters for a contemporary audience.

A modern London setting changes the Christie formula

One of the biggest departures from the source material is the setting.

Rather than attempting to recreate the period in which Christie originally wrote the characters, Tommy & Tuppence places its detectives firmly in present-day London.

That decision gives the adaptation room to reinterpret how the pair investigate crimes while retaining the fundamental ingredients that made them distinctive in Christie’s books.
