Kevin Costner Western Open Range Hailed as an Underrated “Masterpiece” With an Incredibly Realistic Gunfight

More than two decades after its release, Kevin Costner’s Open Range is earning renewed praise from Western fans, with viewers describing the 2003 film as an underrated gem and applauding its climactic action for delivering one of cinema’s most realistic gunfights.
Set in 1880s Montana, the film stars Robert Duvall as Boss Spearman, a former Union soldier who has left violence behind to become a cattle rancher. He is driving a herd across the country with cowhands Charley Waite, played by Costner, Mose, portrayed by Abraham Benrubi, and Button, played by Diego Luna.
Their quiet journey takes a dangerous turn when Mose heads into a nearby town for supplies and fails to return.
Costner directs an old-fashioned Western

Based on Ralph Kimball’s 1990 novel The Open Range Men, the film was directed and co-produced by Costner and was primarily filmed in Alberta, Canada.
Alongside Costner and Duvall, the cast includes Annette Bening, known for films including The Grifters and American Beauty, as well as Michael Gambon, who later became widely recognized for portraying Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films.
At its heart, Open Range explores men attempting to escape violent pasts only to find themselves forced into confrontation once again.
That traditional approach to the genre has proved particularly popular with Western enthusiasts.
Fans call Open Range a “true Western masterpiece”

One audience reviewer went as far as describing Open Range as the “best Western film I have ever seen,” calling it a “true Western masterpiece” that combines a powerful story with gripping action.
Another praised Costner and Duvall’s performances while describing the movie as beautifully filmed and an example of “old-fashioned Wild West drama at its best.”
Others believe the movie has never received quite the recognition it deserves.
One viewer called it an “underrated gem” and a comeback for Costner, while singling out Duvall for a particularly impressive performance. The fan argued that it ranks among the strongest Westerns produced during the 2000s and deserves to be reassessed.
The gunfight earns particular praise
For some viewers, however, it is the film’s handling of its action that truly distinguishes it.
One IMDb reviewer described the movie as containing the “most realistic film gunfight I’ve ever seen.”
The same viewer praised the attention to detail and sharp dialogue while arguing that Duvall’s performance deserved Oscar consideration.
Audience enthusiasm is also reflected in the film’s Rotten Tomatoes scores. Open Range holds an 84% Popcornmeter score, representing users who rated the movie at least 3.5 stars.
Its Tomatometer score stands at 79%, reflecting the percentage of approved critics who gave the film a positive review.
With its sweeping frontier landscapes, traditional Western storytelling and acclaimed performances from Costner and Duvall, Open Range has continued to find admirers more than 20 years after arriving in cinemas.
Open Range is currently streaming on Netflix.
