Netflix’s Five-Part Crime Thriller Blood Sacrifice Becomes a Global Hit as Viewers Call It ‘Absolutely Addictive’

Netflix has another crime drama grabbing viewers’ attention, with the five-part Swedish thriller Blood Sacrifice rapidly climbing the streaming charts and earning enthusiastic reactions from fans.

The series, known by its original Swedish title Blodsoffer, has reached No. 3 on Netflix’s UK Top 10 series chart at the time of writing, sitting behind the latest seasons of Outer Banks and Love Is Blind UK. Reports also indicate that the show has performed strongly internationally, reaching the No. 1 position in countries including the United States.

With its five episodes running for just over four hours altogether, Blood Sacrifice has also become an easy one- or two-day binge for viewers looking for a compact crime mystery.

A disturbing case begins in Stockholm

Set during a Stockholm summer, when darkness barely arrives, the story begins with an emergency call reporting what appears to be a home invasion.

Two police officers are dispatched to a summer house in the archipelago, but when they arrive, nobody appears to be there.

By the following day, both officers have been found dead following a brutal crime.

Their deaths become the beginning of a terrifying series of murders that appear to have one thing in common: police officers are being targeted.

As the investigation grows increasingly difficult, the detective leading the case turns to an unlikely source for assistance — his own father, a retired detective.

Together, they must attempt to understand what is behind the killings while the danger continues to escalate.

From the writer behind Lupin and Hijack

The series comes from George Kay, whose previous television credits include several prominent thrillers.

Kay created ITV’s Gone, Apple TV+’s Idris Elba-led Hijack and Netflix hit Lupin. His other writing credits include My Mad Fat Diary, Killing Eve and true-crime drama Litvinenko, while he also created Criminal: UK.

That experience with tightly constructed crime stories is reflected in Blood Sacrifice, which wastes little time establishing its central mystery across its short five-episode run.

Viewers say they ‘simply can’t stop’ watching

The series has already generated strong reactions among Netflix viewers, with its dark atmosphere and rapid pacing receiving particular praise.

One viewer described it as “dark, intense, and absolutely addictive,” saying the series kept them hooked from beginning to end.

“For me, it was one of those shows you start watching and simply can’t stop,” they added.

Another viewer praised its unusual and unsettling atmosphere, writing: “Unique. Little creepy. Excellent storyline.”

They also highlighted the advantage of having only five episodes, saying the story “starts off fast and is edgy the whole time.”

One critic went even further, describing Blood Sacrifice as “a crime thriller masterpiece.”

Other viewers have highlighted the drama’s exploration of relationships alongside the murder investigation, particularly the dynamic between the father and son drawn into solving the case.

Not everyone was convinced by the finale

Despite the strong response, the ending has divided some viewers.

They described the conclusion as “rather lacklustre and anticlimactic,” while still recommending the series as a quick and entertaining binge.

That mixed reaction to the finale has done little to slow the show’s early momentum.
