Harry Styles turned the opening night of his Madison Square Garden residency into an unexpectedly emotional tribute to Dolly Parton on Wednesday, just one day after the country music legend’s death at 80.
As he stood before the New York crowd, Harry took a moment to acknowledge the musicians who had inspired him throughout his career. He then singled out Dolly, simply saying: “Dolly, thank you so much.”
Moments later, his band began playing “I Will Always Love You,” with Dolly’s original voice heard alongside the music. Harry encouraged the audience to sing along, turning the arena into a powerful farewell to one of music’s most beloved figures.
The tribute came as stars around the world continued to mourn Dolly, whose representatives confirmed that she died following a brief battle with cancer. Her death has prompted an extraordinary outpouring of grief from musicians, actors and public figures.
Among the most emotional tributes came from Dolly’s goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, who described the loss of her “Aunt Dolly” as almost impossible to put into words.
Miley said some of their most sacred memories would remain private, but added that she believed Dolly would want her to “feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong.” She also recalled one of their final conversations, which centered on music and transformation.
Dolly had been part of Miley’s life since she was a baby. She previously explained that Miley’s father, Billy Ray Cyrus, had asked her to become his daughter’s godmother when Miley was born.
“I accept,” Dolly recalled saying at the time, adding that although they never held a formal ceremony, she was incredibly proud of Miley and loved her “like one of my own.”
Katy Perry was also among the stars remembering Dolly, praising the singer for breaking stereotypes throughout her career. Perry highlighted Dolly’s intelligence, voice, humor and, above all, her enormous heart.
Other stars including Reba McEntire, Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, Eminem, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pedro Pascal, Khloé Kardashian and Hillary Clinton also shared tributes.
Meanwhile, Dolly’s influence was visibly honored far beyond the music industry. The Empire State Building announced that its lights would glow in pink sparkle in her memory, while President Donald Trump paid tribute and ordered American flags lowered nationwide for a week.
For Harry, however, the tribute carried an especially personal musical connection. Dolly’s songs have influenced generations of artists, and “I Will Always Love You” remains one of the most recognizable songs in modern music.
By choosing that song on the very first night of his 30-show Madison Square Garden residency, Harry transformed what could have been an ordinary concert moment into something much more intimate — a room full of people singing back to the voice of a woman whose music had reached far beyond country music.
