Good Morning America viewers have some thoughts about Michael Strahan‘s latest hosting replacement.
Strahan started last week on the ABC morning show, but has been absent from the series since July 21. Rachel Scott, Rebecca Jarvis, and Whit Johnson filled in for Strahan, Robin Roberts, and George Stephanopoulos for the remainder of the week, before the latter two anchors returned to the GMA studio on Monday, July 27.
While there was no substitute host for Strahan on Monday, ESPN and ABC sports commentator Joe Buck stepped in for the anchor on Tuesday, July 28. During the episode, Roberts and Stephanopoulos took a moment to congratulate Buck on receiving the Ford C. Frick Award at the 2026 National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday, July 26. The award was meaningful to Joe, as his late father, Jack Buck, was also a recipient.
Additionally, Joe took ABC News’ Trevor Ault behind the scenes of his new series, ESPN Jeopardy!, in a segment aired on Tuesday. “The prep is like testing every bit of my reading skills. I mean, getting through these clues, they are wordy, they are convoluted, they are brilliantly written. I am like a C-student,” he said of taking on the show’s hosting role.
Ault mentioned that Joe previously compared hosting Jeopardy! to hosting GMA. “You just kind of go and fly by the seat of your pants. And that’s what I found doing GMA, which is a blast, too, but it’s just so different than what I do in my ‘day job,’” he explained.
Joe previously guest-hosted GMA back in July 2025, filling in for Stephanopoulos. GMA fans, however, had some mixed thoughts about Joe’s latest guest-hosting stint. “Not a fan of the man. I switched over to the Today Show,” one person commented underneath an Instagram clip from Tuesday’s episode. Another added, “Boo to Joe buck, changing to nbc station until he’s gone.” Someone else shared, “Why did Robin and George looked irritated with dude being on the show.”
Over on X, some users claimed that Joe’s voice sounded significantly louder than his co-hosts’ during the episode. “The voice and the volume of this ESPN host that cohosting @GMA Joe Buck is NOT proper for early morning and so very much annoying,” one X user posted. A different person wrote, “Joe Buck is very loud for this early in the morning.”

Someone else stated, “Audio and production @GMA, please tell Joe Buck to stop yelling. Heading to watch The Today Show.” Sharing a different opinion, another user posted, “Enjoying @GMA and special guest host Joe Buck and excited for that nutty squirrel video!”
Strahan gave fans a glimpse into his time off via Instagram on Monday. “Italy thank you for the great time and great new memories!!! Salute until next time!” he wrote alongside several picturesque snaps from his Italian getaway.
