Following Spain’s 1-0 win against Argentina in the final match of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA cropped President Donald Trump out of the champions’ celebration photo.

Photos shared on FIFA’s official X account after the Sunday, July 19, World Cup final appear to have been cropped to exclude Trump, who was lingering on stage beside Spain’s players as they celebrated with the trophy at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The photo captures Spain’s players leaping into the air in celebration, with only the edge of Trump’s navy suit visible in one corner.

A triumphant photo posted to the team’s social media account also seemed to exclude the president. As well as in a 20-slide post that went up showing different players celebrating the glory as they each held the trophy.

Following the win, which was secured after the game went into 30 minutes of extra time, the crowd protested Trump’s moment in the spotlight during the medal ceremony.

As Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the field to present the players with their medals, boos echoed in the stadium. The president waved toward the crowd as spectators made their disapproval of his presence heard.

Moments before the final match began, Trump spoke to Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft about the success of the United States co-hosting the World Cup with Mexico and Canada this summer. Trump said Infantino “had this idea” and that “it turns out we are a soccer country.”

“I don’t think there’s ever been anything like what’s happened with the whole World Cup, it’s been beautiful to watch,” Trump continued.

Trump’s ties with FIFA have become increasingly controversial during his second presidential term. In July 2025, after presenting medals to Chelsea at the first FIFA Club World Cup, he sparked backlash when he appeared to walk away with one of the championship medals.

He then provoked the ire of World Cup fans earlier in the 2026 tournament when he made a personal phone call to Infantino, asking him to review the red card and subsequent suspension received by U.S. striker Folarin Balogun in the round of 32.

The suspension was ultimately overturned, allowing Balogun to play in the United States’ round of 16 game against Belgium, leading many international fans to call foul play. “All I did, I asked for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul,” Trump said at the time. “I saw the play, and I’m a person who loves sports and was a good athlete. That wasn’t a foul. That wasn’t even an infraction.”

His administration also fueled concerns over the United States’ role in overseeing the World Cup while continuing to expand foreign travel bans and conduct immigration raids.

In July 2025, 90 civil society groups signed an open letter demanding that FIFA press Trump on his policies ahead of the biggest event in soccer.

“We call on FIFA to use its influence to encourage the U.S. government to guarantee the fundamental rights of the millions of foreign visitors and fans who seek entry to the U.S. to attend the tournaments, and those of the constitutional rights of the many immigrants who already live, work, and contribute meaningfully to the cities selected to host them,” the letter read.
