A seemingly simple question left several contestants on The 1% Club struggling against the clock.
The challenge asked players to pay close attention to the wording of the question itself rather than rely on general knowledge. They had just 30 seconds to work out which letter appeared most often at the end of the words.

The question that caught players out
The puzzle appeared during an episode of the second series of ITV’s The 1% Club, hosted by Lee Mack.
Unlike traditional quiz shows, the programme does not focus on general knowledge or facts contestants can memorise. Instead, its questions are designed around logic, reasoning and common sense. Each episode begins with 100 contestants, who are gradually eliminated as the questions become more difficult.
The ultimate aim is to reach the final question, which is designed to be answered correctly by only one per cent of the public.
The question in this particular round was:
What letter appears most often in this question as the last letter of the words?
It was rated as a 40% question, meaning it was expected to be answered correctly by just under half of the public.
That might sound relatively straightforward compared with some of the show’s tougher puzzles. But with the clock running, several contestants appeared to find the wording surprisingly difficult to unpack.
Seven contestants eliminated
As the 30-second countdown continued, players were left trying to work out exactly what they needed to count.
Lee Mack even joked about one contestant who had “left it to the last second” as the time ran down.
When the 30 seconds were over, Lee revealed that seven contestants had been knocked out by the question.
So, what was the answer?
The correct answer was S.
The letter S appears four times as the final letter of a word in the question.
Looking carefully at the wording reveals the four examples:

That makes S the letter appearing most frequently at the end of the words in the question.
It is the kind of puzzle that rewards slowing down and reading exactly what is being asked, even when the countdown is putting contestants under pressure.
Why The 1% Club can be so difficult
The format of The 1% Club is deliberately different from conventional quiz shows. The contestants do not need to revise a list of facts or demonstrate specialist knowledge. Instead, the questions test how they process information and apply logic and common sense. ITV describes the show as one where contestants are put on a level playing field because general-knowledge revision is not required.
Each question carries a percentage reflecting its difficulty, with a higher percentage indicating an easier question. The challenge gradually narrows the field until contestants face the most difficult questions.
That is why a question that appears almost effortless at first glance can still catch people out when they have only a few seconds to solve it.
Other questions have caused similar problems
This was not the first time The 1% Club had left contestants and viewers surprised by an apparently simple puzzle.
Previous episodes have featured questions that resulted in contestants being eliminated despite the answers seeming obvious to viewers. A question involving a picture of a cat caused problems for some contestants, while a question about the days of the week also left viewers struggling.
The show’s format continues to put the emphasis on how people think rather than what they have memorised. ITV’s programme information confirms that each episode begins with 100 contestants, with the potential prize reaching £100,000.
