Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have finally revealed the name of their newborn daughter, two weeks after welcoming their third child in Portugal.

The couple announced on Monday that their baby girl is named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, joining older brothers August, five, and Ernest, three.

Eugenie marked the announcement by sharing three intimate photographs of Adelaide, including an image of the newborn wrapped in a light blue blanket, a close-up of her tiny hand and a touching first meeting with her brothers. HELLO! understands that the Princess took all three photographs herself.

“2 weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time,” Eugenie wrote alongside the images.

She added: “Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.”

Eugenie also has two sons

Adelaide’s name brings together family connections and elements of both English and Portuguese history, reflecting two countries that hold particular significance for Eugenie and Jack.

Her first name is partly linked to Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV. It also has a Portuguese connection through Maria Adelaide, the name associated with two Portuguese women — a royal and a saint.

There is another personal link between Eugenie and Queen Adelaide. During the evening reception following her 2018 wedding, Eugenie wore two diamond wheat-ear brooches in her hair that had originally been commissioned by William IV for Queen Adelaide.

Adelaide’s first middle name, Elizabeth, honours her late great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The inspiration behind Annina has not been publicly specified, though it is believed to reflect a personal connection.

Explaining the choice, Eugenie wrote: “Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.”

Why Eugenie and Jack waited two weeks

Eugenie and Jack first announced on 4 August that they had welcomed a daughter, but deliberately left her name out of the initial announcement.

HELLO! understands that Eugenie, 36, and Jack, 40, wanted time to choose the right name and planned to share it only when they felt ready.

Their 14-day wait was considerably longer than some recent royal baby announcements. The Prince and Princess of Wales, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan, have generally taken around two days to reveal their children’s names.

For Eugenie and Jack, however, waiting is nothing new.

When their first son was born in 2021, neither the Palace announcement nor Eugenie’s original social media post disclosed his name. It was another 11 days before she confirmed that he was August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

The approach was different when their second son arrived in 2023. His full name, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, was included in his birth announcement.

Eugenie’s sister Princess Beatrice has also taken her time with similar announcements.

Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi waited 13 days after Sienna’s birth in 2021 before revealing her name alongside a photograph of her footprints. When their daughter Athena arrived last year, they waited a week before announcing both the birth and her name.

There is plenty of historical precedent, too. The Duke and Duchess of York waited two weeks before confirming Princess Beatrice’s name in 1988, while Queen Elizabeth II did not publicly announce Prince Charles’ name until a month after his birth in 1948.

Against that backdrop, the two-week wait for Adelaide’s name is far from unusual within the royal family.

A family tradition of sentimental names

Meaningful family references have featured prominently in the names Eugenie and Jack have chosen for all three of their children.

August’s full name honours several relatives, including Eugenie’s paternal grandfather, Prince Philip.

Following Ernest’s birth, Eugenie explained another set of family connections, writing: “He is named after his great great great Grandfather George, his Grandpa George and my Grandpa Ronald.”

The same pattern can be seen in Princess Beatrice’s family.

Her daughters are Sienna Elizabeth, four, and Athena Elizabeth Rose, one. Both carry Elizabeth as a middle name in tribute to Beatrice and Eugenie’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

By choosing Elizabeth for Adelaide, Eugenie has now continued that family tribute with her own daughter.

What we know about Adelaide Brooksbank

Adelaide was born on 3 August 2026 at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, weighing 6lb 9oz. Mother and baby were reported to be doing well following the birth.

She is the third child of Eugenie and Jack and the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, following the arrival of Athena Mapelli Mozzi in January last year.

Adelaide is also 15th in line to the British throne.

She will not, however, carry an HRH title because she is not a direct grandchild of the reigning monarch, King Charles.

Eugenie announced her third pregnancy in May with a family photograph featuring August and Ernest. Ernest appeared in a Chelsea football kit, while August wore a long-sleeved grey T-shirt as the brothers held an image of their new sibling’s baby scan.

“The royal sisters have both avoided complications for their children by avoiding royal and aristocratic titles,” he said.

“Their children are simply August and Ernest Brooksbank and Sienna and Athena Mapelli Mozzi. It means less scrutiny and means they can avoid the burden of being truly public figures.”

Eugenie and Beatrice largely remained away from the public spotlight earlier this year amid renewed scrutiny surrounding their parents’ past friendships with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

More recently, however, the sisters have appeared to be returning gradually to public engagements. In June, both attended the wedding of Harriet and Peter Phillips alongside senior members of the royal family, including King Charles, Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales.
