During The Voice: 30th Season Celebration on Thursday, September 17, Daly reunited with original coaches Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and CeeLo Green, along with Stefani, who joined the coaching panel in Season 7. The group looked back on the early days of Shelton and Stefani’s relationship and revealed just how surprised some of their coworkers were when the two began getting close.
“There’s something happening with Blake and Gwen,” Daly remembered thinking at the time.
But he was far from convinced that the relationship would actually last.
“We were both like, ‘There’s no way. There’s no way this is possible,’” Daly said.
Levine had a completely different reaction.
While Daly was skeptical, Levine said he was excited from the beginning and immediately believed something real was happening between the two coaches.
“I was so pumped on it,” Levine recalled. “I was like, ‘This is going down, dude. This is going down.’”
Daly even admitted that he tried to keep the romance from moving forward.
“I tried everything in my power to not let this thing happen,” he said.
Levine, however, already believed he knew exactly what was going on.
“I know what’s going on,” he remembered thinking.
Stefani was surprised to hear that Levine had figured it out so early.
“You knew?” she asked.
“Of course I did,” Levine replied.
Shelton also confirmed Daly’s version of events, saying his longtime friend really did try to convince the couple to slow things down.
Daly explained that his concerns came partly from what both stars had recently gone through in their personal lives. Shelton had publicly gone through his divorce from Miranda Lambert in 2015, while Stefani filed for divorce from Gavin Rossdale that same year after 14 years of marriage.
Daly recalled visiting Stefani’s home and realizing that the situation between the two singers was becoming serious.
“I’ve known you for a long time and I love you,” Daly told Shelton. “I was like, ‘You guys gotta stop this. This will never work.’”
Of course, the story ended very differently from what Daly expected.
Years later, Shelton called Daly in New York with a very different question.
The country star asked Daly to officiate his wedding to Stefani.
The couple first went public with their relationship in 2015, several years before announcing their engagement in October 2020. Shelton and Stefani married in July 2021, with Daly serving as the officiant.
For Shelton, the marriage marked his third. He was previously married to Kaynette Williams from 2003 to 2006 and later to Lambert from 2011 to 2015.
Stefani also entered the marriage with her three sons, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo, whom she shares with Rossdale.

Their relationship eventually became one of the most recognizable romances connected to The Voice. Stefani later returned to the coaching panel alongside Shelton, most recently serving during Season 26 in 2024.
Shelton left The Voice after Season 23 in 2023 following more than a decade on the show. He later returned for appearances during the Season 25 finale in 2024 and the Season 27 finale in 2025.
Now, as The Voice celebrates its 30th season, the former coworkers can look back at a romance that Daly once believed would never work. Instead, Shelton and Stefani went from fellow coaches to husband and wife, with the show playing a major role in bringing them together.
