Her cousin Richie Owens recently revealed that the country music icon did not share the full details of her illness before her death. Dolly died at 80 on August 25 after what her family described as a brief battle with cancer.

Owens, who worked with Dolly throughout her music career and also helped preserve the history of the Parton family, opened up about her final months while remembering her remarkable life and legacy.

Dolly had previously told fans that she was dealing with health problems, but she never publicly revealed that she had cancer.

According to Owens, even he did not know how serious her condition had become.

“She had posted that she had been going through health problems, but no one really knew what a lot of that was, including myself,” he recalled.

There was a reason Dolly chose to keep those details to herself.

“She always kept things private because she always wanted to keep everybody being positive around her,” Owens explained.

“She wanted to keep it very quiet,” he said, explaining that the family viewed the gathering as a private burial rather than a formal funeral service.

Only a small number of family members were there.

Owens said the burial was intentionally quiet and happened quickly. It was not because Dolly did not have people who loved her or wanted to say goodbye. It was simply what she had wanted.

Dolly also had a very clear idea of what she wanted people to do instead of spending large amounts of money on flowers after her death.

She would rather that money go toward helping children through her Imagination Library.

Owens remembered Dolly repeatedly saying that if people were planning to spend money on flowers for her, she would prefer them to donate that money to her charity instead.

“She really cared about her charities,” he said.

That wish reflects one of the biggest parts of Dolly’s legacy. Throughout her life, she used her success to help others, with the Imagination Library becoming one of her most important charitable efforts.

News of Dolly’s death was first shared through a message from her nephew Bryan Seaver, who explained that Dolly had asked him years earlier to deliver the news when that difficult day eventually came.

For her family, carrying out that request was an emotional moment filled with both pride and sadness.

Dolly’s official obituary also remembered the qualities that made her so beloved around the world, including her music, songwriting, humor, warmth and kindness.

She may have kept her final health battle private, but Dolly spent her life making sure the love she had for others was never hidden.

Even during her most difficult days, she wanted people to remain hopeful, share love and continue helping others.
