Ella Langley Gives Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” a Fiery Rock-Infused Tribute

Ella Langley turned her Alabama hometown show into a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton, putting her own hard-driving spin on one of the country legend’s most recognizable songs.

During her August 28 performance at Neville Arena in Auburn, Alabama, Langley paused her set to honor Parton, who died August 25 at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer.

“Tonight’s show didn’t feel right without doing something like this,” Langley told the packed crowd before launching into Parton’s classic “Jolene.”

Instead of closely recreating Parton’s original recording, Langley and her band took the song in a much heavier direction. Loud guitars and a pronounced rock influence gave the familiar country classic a fresh intensity, while Langley delivered the song as a personal tribute to one of the artists who helped shape the genre.

The performance came during the first of Langley’s two Dandelion Tour shows at Neville Arena, a particularly fitting setting for the Alabama native.

Ella Langley Reflects on Dolly Parton’s Legacy

Langley had already shared her thoughts on Parton’s death before taking the stage in Auburn. In an Instagram Stories tribute, she praised Parton not only for her music, but for the example she set for women working in the entertainment industry.

“Dolly, thank you for standing up for yourself as an artist, a songwriter, a musician, a producer, an author, a creative, and most importantly a woman in this industry. You paved the way for so many to be brave,” Langley wrote.

She continued by celebrating Parton’s authenticity and the influence she had on generations of artists.

“Thank you for being unafraid to show your most authentic self. The world needed Dolly and will never see another like it. The gates of heaven just welcomed home a beautiful soul,” Langley wrote.

Dolly Parton’s Final Days

Parton died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones. Her representatives confirmed that she had been facing a brief battle with cancer but did not disclose the type of cancer involved.

Her death brought an immediate wave of tributes from across country music and beyond. Parton, whose career stretched across nearly six decades, left an influence that extended well beyond her recordings, with her work as a songwriter, performer, author, actress and philanthropist making her one of the most influential figures in American entertainment.
