The Name Came From a Young Fan

Parton once explained that the unusual name “Jolene” came from an encounter with a young fan during an autograph signing.

The little girl was about 8 years old and immediately caught Parton’s attention. She had red hair, beautiful skin, and green eyes. But it was her name that ultimately stayed with Parton.

“One night, I was on stage, and there was this beautiful little girl—she was probably 8 years old at the time,” Dolly once recalled. “And she had this beautiful red hair, this beautiful skin, these beautiful green eyes, and she was looking up at me, holding, you know, for an autograph. I said, ‘Well, you’re the prettiest little thing I ever saw. So what is your name?’ And she said, ‘Jolene.’”

The name immediately struck her as something that belonged in a song.

“I said, ‘Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene.’ I said, ‘That is pretty. That sounds like a song. I’m going to write a song about that.’”

And Parton kept her word.

The Story Was Inspired by a Flirtatious Bank Teller

While the name came from a child she met at a signing, the emotional situation at the heart of “Jolene” came from a very different experience.

Parton has said the song was inspired by a flirtatious bank teller who appeared to have a crush on her husband, Carl Dean.

The woman, according to Parton, had qualities that made her feel particularly memorable. Dolly later joked that the bank teller possessed things she herself did not, including beautiful red hair and a figure that had caught her husband’s attention.

That real-life encounter provided the foundation for the song’s story. Parton then paired it with the beautiful name she had heard from her young fan.

The result was “Jolene,” a song built from two seemingly unrelated moments that came together to create one of the most recognizable songs of Parton’s career.

More than five decades after it was first recorded, “Jolene” continues to resonate with listeners and remains one of Dolly Parton’s most beloved songs.
