Amanda Mikkel Turns a Year and a Half of Sacrifice Into a Four-Chair Turn on The Voice
Amanda Mikkel walked onto The Voice stage carrying far more than a song. The 31-year-old singer had spent the past year and a half living out of her car while working multiple jobs and pursuing the music career she refused to give up on.
By the end of her Blind Audition, all four coaches had turned their chairs, the panel gave her a standing ovation, and Adam Levine used the new First-In Button to claim her for his team.
Mikkel closed the final Blind Audition of The Voice Season 30’s three-night premiere week with a soulful performance of Andy Williams’ “Moon River.” Levine was the first coach to turn, followed quickly by Kelly Clarkson, with Queen Latifah and Riley Green joining them soon afterward.
A Dream That Has Come With a Heavy Price
Before singing, Mikkel explained just how much she has sacrificed in pursuit of her goal.
She said she is willing to do whatever it takes to make her dreams happen, which is why she works as hard as she does. The journey, she acknowledged, has been both mentally and spiritually demanding, and it has required her to give up a considerable amount of comfort.
That sacrifice became clear when Mikkel revealed that she has been living in her car for the past year and a half.
She keeps her belongings in storage, packs the things she needs for the week, and continues moving from place to place. She acknowledged that she could return home and live more comfortably, but said pursuing the path she believes is right for her means more.
Mikkel’s story added another layer to an audition that already stood out for the coaches. Rather than treating the performance as simply an opportunity to impress the panel, she approached “Moon River” with the weight of everything she had endured to reach that stage.
All Four Coaches Turn for “Moon River”
Mikkel quickly captured the coaches’ attention once she began singing.
Levine turned first, followed by Clarkson. Latifah and Green soon joined them, giving Mikkel a coveted four-chair turn. The coaches also rose for a standing ovation when the performance ended.
Levine praised the purity of Mikkel’s voice and said its natural beauty meant she could make virtually anything she sang sound beautiful. He also connected with the softness and soulfulness in her delivery.
Clarkson’s response was especially personal. She revealed that she, too, had slept in her car during difficult periods of her life.
For Clarkson, Mikkel’s willingness to sacrifice comfort for her dream demonstrated the confidence she carries inside. She told the singer that her voice was unlike other voices and reminded her that she was special.
Queen Latifah was equally moved by the performance. She told Mikkel that she sounded gorgeous and that the musical places Mikkel traveled during the song were exactly where she wanted to be. Latifah also said she would love to accompany her on the journey.
Green offered a different perspective, focusing on how naturally Mikkel seemed to perform.
He said it was the first time someone had stepped onto the stage and made the experience feel less like an audition and more like a performance that the coaches were simply fortunate enough to witness.
The reaction was significant enough that Mikkel never got the chance to participate in a traditional four-way coaching battle.
Adam Levine Uses the First-In Button
Levine had turned his chair first, and that timing became crucial.
Rather than waiting for Mikkel to weigh her options and choose a coach, Levine pressed the new First-In Button. The Season 30 feature allows a coach who is first to turn for an artist to automatically claim that singer for their team. Each coach can use the feature once during the Blind Auditions.
With that move, Mikkel officially became the newest member of Team Adam.
The decision also happened to align with Mikkel’s own preference. After the audition, she revealed that Levine would have been her first choice anyway.
She described his decision to use the First-In Button on her as incredible and said she felt honored that he wanted her on his team.
Amanda Mikkel’s The Voice Journey Begins
Mikkel’s four-chair turn made her one of the standout performers from the conclusion of the Season 30 premiere. She was also among the artists to receive all four coaches’ attention during the opening Blind Auditions.
The Dayton, Ohio native, now based in Los Angeles, entered the competition with a background that includes work as an artist, songwriter, background vocalist and creative director. Before appearing on The Voice, she had performed with other artists and worked as a vocalist on recorded projects.
Her appearance on the show now gives her an opportunity to pursue the dream she has sacrificed so much to follow, this time with Levine as her coach.
Following the conclusion of The Voice Season 30’s premiere week, the competition moves to its regular Monday schedule on NBC.
