The 1% Club Faces Backlash After Viewers Brand £100,000 Final Question ‘Too Easy’
Fans of ITV’s The 1% Club have criticised one of the show’s £100,000 final questions, with some viewers claiming the puzzle was far easier than they expected. While one contestant struggled to secure the life-changing prize, several people watching at home said they had spotted the answer almost immediately.
Hosted by comedian Lee Mack, The 1% Club challenges contestants to put their logic, reasoning and general knowledge to the test. The format brings together 100 players, each competing for a share of the opportunity to win big, with a £1,000 stake and a series of 15 questions standing between them and the final challenge.
As the questions become progressively harder, the ultimate goal is to solve a puzzle designed to be answered correctly by just one per cent of the population. Get it right, and the contestant could walk away with an impressive £100,000.
However, not every final question has left viewers equally impressed.

Viewers Say the £100,000 Question Was ‘Easy Peasy’
In an episode aired last month, contestant Tessa found herself facing the show’s all-important final question. Despite the pressure of playing for £100,000, the puzzle appeared relatively straightforward to some viewers watching from home.
The question read:
“Using only two letters to fill in the blank, what is the word below? P _ _ _ E _ _ I _ N.”

As Tessa nervously considered her answer, viewers took to social media to share their reactions. Several claimed they had worked out the solution almost instantly, questioning whether the puzzle really deserved to be the show’s ultimate challenge.
One viewer wrote: “Don’t usually get the last question but I saw that one instantly. Easy peasy.”
Another was equally surprised by their success, commenting: “Got it! Blimey I actually answered the 1% question.”
Unfortunately for Tessa, she did not manage to secure the £100,000 prize. According to the show’s format, she fell among the 99 per cent of people expected to get the question wrong.

For anyone still wondering, the correct answer was possession.
The reaction highlighted how differently viewers can approach the show’s final puzzles. While some questions leave contestants and audiences scratching their heads, others seem much more manageable to those watching at home.

Another Episode Leaves Viewers Stumped by a Maths Puzzle
While some fans felt Tessa’s final question was too easy, another episode from the same month prompted a very different reaction.
Contestants Maisie and Alex made it all the way to the final question, which many viewers described as one of the toughest challenges the programme had presented.
This time, the puzzle required some mathematical reasoning rather than identifying a word.
The question stated:
“Given that: 0+100 =100, 1+99 = 100, 2+98 =100, what is the sum of all the whole numbers between zero and 100?”

The task was to calculate the sum of every whole number from zero to 100, using the information provided. Although the examples offered a clue to the underlying pattern, finding the answer under the pressure of a television quiz proved difficult for many viewers.
Social media users were quick to share their frustration.
One viewer described it as potentially the toughest puzzle they had encountered on the programme, writing: “This is possibly the hardest 1% question I’ve come across. I would even consider it a 0.1% question.”
Another admitted that the numerical challenges were particularly difficult for them, commenting: “The number ones always get me!”
Others were less fortunate when it came to finding the solution. “I didn’t get it. Gutted,” one person wrote.
A fourth viewer summed up their struggle with maths, saying: “I didn’t even try with that one. Maths is hard enough on a calculator for me, never mind doing it in my head in 30 seconds.”
Why the Correct Answer Was 5,050
Maisie and Alex eventually settled on 5,000 as their answer. They were remarkably close, but the missing detail was enough to cost them the correct solution.
Lee Mack explained that the numbers could be arranged into pairs, with each pair adding up to 100.
For example, 0 and 100 make 100, while 1 and 99 also total 100. The same pattern continues throughout the sequence.
There are 50 such pairs, and multiplying 50 by 100 gives a total of 5,000.
However, there is one number that does not fit into a pair: 50 itself. Because it sits in the middle of the sequence, it must be added separately.
As Mack explained: “There are 50 pairs that total 100 (0 and 100, 1 and 99, 2 and 98, etc). That makes 5,000, but there is also the number 50 in the middle.
“That is not in a pair but also needs to be counted, giving a total of 5,050.”
The correct answer, therefore, was 5,050, rather than the 5,000 suggested by the contestants.
The Challenge of Getting the Final Question Right
The contrasting reactions to the two episodes demonstrate why The 1% Club continues to generate discussion among its viewers. A question that seems obvious to one person can leave another completely stumped, particularly when contestants have to think quickly under pressure.
Tessa’s word puzzle prompted complaints that the £100,000 challenge was too easy, while Maisie and Alex’s mathematical question left many viewers struggling to work out the answer.
With Lee Mack continuing to guide contestants through increasingly challenging puzzles, the show’s final question remains a talking point for fans, whether they believe it is surprisingly simple or almost impossible to solve in the moment.
And for anyone who, like many viewers, finds mental arithmetic a challenge, the explanation behind the 5,050 answer offers a useful reminder: sometimes, spotting the pattern is only half the battle.
