One of TV’s Most Beloved Worlds Is Coming Back… Netflix Is Reviving An Iconic ’80s And ’90s Sitcom With A New 10-Episode Sequel — And Several Fan-Favorite Original Stars Are Returning Alongside A Whole New Generation

A Different World Returns With a New Generation at Hillman College

Hillman College is opening its doors again. Netflix’s sequel to the iconic ’90s sitcom A Different World will follow Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year and tries to create a life and legacy of her own.

Played by Maleah Joi Moon, Deborah will lead a new generation of Hillman students in the 10-episode sequel, which will explore their friendships, romances, ambitions, and college experiences.

Newly released photos introduce the students joining Moon at Hillman. The cast includes Alijah Kai (Everybody Hates Chris) as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche (One of Us Is Lying) as Kojo, Cornell Young IV (Doing Life) as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall (The Idea of You) as Amir, and newcomer Kennedi Reece as Hazel.

Moon is joined by a mix of young performers and familiar faces from the original series, with the new cast stepping into a Hillman shaped by the legacy of the characters who came before them.

A new chapter at Hillman

Felicia Pride (Grey’s Anatomy, Bel-Air), who serves as showrunner and executive producer, says returning to the world of A Different World is deeply personal.

“It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life,” Pride says. “I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.”

Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes and served as a producer on 122 episodes of the original series, is also returning. Allen will executive produce the sequel and direct its premiere episode.

Allen says the time is right to bring the series back.

“There couldn’t be a better time than now to reboot A Different World,” Allen tells Tudum. She points to the original show’s cultural impact, including its influence on historically Black colleges and its role in giving young Black Americans a strong voice and platform.

For Allen, the combination of the original cast favorites and the new generation of performers makes the return particularly exciting.

What is the sequel about?

Deborah arrives at Hillman as a spirited, well-meaning and rebellious freshman. Being the daughter of Dwayne and Whitley comes with its own expectations, and she quickly realizes that stepping out of her parents’ shadow will be one of her biggest challenges.

Rather than simply following in their footsteps, Deborah is determined to establish her own identity and build a legacy that belongs to her. Along the way, she will experience college life alongside a new group of Hillman’s brightest students.

The sequel will follow this new generation through their relationships, friendships and adventures while connecting their experiences to the world established by the original series.

Original writers are returning, too

The sequel also brings back writers Reggie Rock Bythewood (Get on the Bus, Swagger) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, Love & Basketball), who will serve as executive producers alongside Mandy Summers (That ’90s Show, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh) and Tom Werner (The Connors, Rosanne, A Different World).

For Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, the return to Hillman carries a special significance. The married writing team began their careers on A Different World, and the series was also where they met.

A Different World changed everything for us,” the Bythewoods tell Tudum. They describe the show as the place where they began writing professionally and found each other, making their return part of a much larger personal and creative legacy.

They say helping reimagine Hillman for a new generation feels like continuing that legacy, with the story still grounded in “love, purpose, and possibility.”

When does the new A Different World premiere?

The original A Different World ran for six seasons on NBC from 1987 to 1993.

The new series will consist of 10 single-camera, half-hour episodes and will join Netflix’s comedy lineup alongside Nobody Wants This, The Vince Staples Show, A Man on the Inside, Emily in Paris, and Survival of the Thickest.

The sequel premieres Sept. 24, arriving in time for back-to-school season.

Until then, fans can revisit the original A Different World and get ready to return to Hillman with Deborah Wayne and the next generation of students.
