Jeopardy Tried To Honor Dolly Parton… But What Happened During Her Special Category Had Country Fans Cringing

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Were Stunned by the Contestants’ Dolly Parton Blunders: ‘This Was Painful to Watch’

A Dolly Parton category on Jeopardy! should have been an easy win for anyone familiar with the country legend’s biggest songs, movies and accomplishments.

Instead, the September 30 episode left viewers scratching their heads as the contestants struggled through the “Remembering Dolly Parton” category, missing several questions that fans considered among the most recognizable facts about her career.

And yes, there was money on the line.

For viewers watching at home, it was the kind of round that had people shouting answers at the television while wondering how none of the contestants seemed ready for it.

The Dolly Parton category began with an easy one

The episode featured Justin Robbins of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, Kristin Franke of Washington, D.C., and Ben Meyerson of New York, New York. Franke ultimately won the game, but the Dolly-themed clues proved surprisingly difficult for the group.

The first clue that really caught attention asked contestants to identify the Tennessee town where Dolly Parton opened Dollywood, partly to celebrate the culture of the region where she grew up.

The answer was Pigeon Forge.

Robbins got that one quickly, giving fans at least one moment of relief. Dollywood remains closely associated with Parton’s Tennessee roots and sits in Pigeon Forge near the Great Smoky Mountains.

But things went downhill from there.

Nobody knew Dolly’s movie debut

For $800, host Ken Jennings presented a clue about Parton’s 1980 big-screen debut and the songs she later wrote for the Broadway musical based on that film.

The answer was “9 to 5.”

Silence.

No one on the panel came up with it.

For Dolly fans, that was particularly hard to watch. 9 to 5 was Parton’s movie debut, and the film became one of the defining projects of her early acting career.

The missed answer was especially painful because the title is tied so closely to Parton’s career that it has become part of the broader pop-culture shorthand surrounding her.

And the category was only getting started.

Then came “Coat of Many Colors”

The $1,600 clue was a Daily Double, giving one contestant the opportunity to make a significant move.

He wagered $3,000.

The clue referred to the patchwork garment Parton’s mother made for her from donated rags and asked for the song inspired by that childhood experience.

The answer was “Coat of Many Colors.”

Instead, the contestant guessed “Jolene.”

That mistake was followed by another memorable miss when a contestant was asked about the song Parton wrote for Porter Wagoner as she prepared to leave his show and begin her solo career.

The answer, of course, was “I Will Always Love You.”

That one was eventually identified correctly by another contestant.

Both songs are central pieces of Parton’s legacy.

“Coat of Many Colors” was inspired by the patchwork coat her mother made for her as a child and became one of Parton’s signature songs. “I Will Always Love You,” meanwhile, was written as a farewell to Wagoner and later became an enormous hit for Whitney Houston.

So when both answers were missed in the same category, longtime Dolly fans understandably had strong feelings.

At least they remembered the Imagination Library

There was one important bright spot.

When the category turned to one of Parton’s proudest accomplishments, the contestants were able to identify Imagination Library, her book-gifting program for children.

Parton founded the program to encourage childhood literacy, and it became one of the most important parts of her philanthropic legacy.

That answer gave fans something to celebrate, even if the road there had been rough.

The official Jeopardy! video caption added another layer of irony. It read, “We could never forget!”

Fans immediately noticed the contrast between that caption and what they had just watched: three contestants struggling to remember some of the most familiar facts about Dolly Parton.

Fans were not impressed

The reaction online was just as entertaining as the category itself.

Viewers expressed disbelief that the contestants missed “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” with many describing the round as embarrassing or painful to watch. Other fans pointed out that contestants cannot be expected to know every subject equally well, even when a particular category feels obvious to longtime followers of the person being featured.

And that is probably the fairest way to look at it.

A contestant can be excellent at history, science, literature or any number of other subjects and still have a blind spot when it comes to country music. Jeopardy! contestants are asked to cover an enormous range of knowledge, and nobody is going to know everything.

Still, watching a dedicated Dolly Parton category unfold this way was bound to sting for her fans.

Dolly Parton fans wanted better

Parton’s appeal has always stretched far beyond country music. Her career included hit records, songwriting, acting, business ventures and philanthropy, while songs such as “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You” became part of the wider American cultural landscape.

Her literacy work became another defining part of her legacy. The Imagination Library, founded in the 1990s, has grown into an international book-gifting program, reflecting the importance Parton placed on helping children develop a love of reading.

That makes the Jeopardy! category something of a strange tribute. The show set aside an entire section to remember Parton, only for several of the most recognizable clues to go unanswered.

For viewers who knew the answers at home, the experience was almost impossible not to find frustrating.

Still, there is some sympathy for the contestants. They were playing a demanding game under pressure, and nobody can be expected to have every Dolly Parton fact memorized.

But if Jeopardy! decides to bring Dolly back for another round of trivia, there will be plenty of fans ready to take the contestants’ places.

And judging by the reaction to this category, they already have their buzzers ready.
