Home Free Celebrate Their Love Of ’90s Country

The group first teased the project for several months before officially announcing it in August. The collection reflects the music its members grew up listening to and singing, giving them an opportunity to pay tribute to the artists and songs that influenced their musical journeys.

When announcing the album, Home Free shared their excitement on Facebook, explaining that they had grown up singing these songs and loving the artists behind them. They also joked about wearing perhaps a little too much denim along the way.

The group described the project as their own tribute to one of their favorite periods in country music, adding that they were still enjoying the process of deciding which songs would make the final tracklist.

With 90s Country Mixtape Vol. 1 now available across streaming platforms, fans can hear Home Free put their own spin on classics such as Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart” and Alabama’s “I’m In A Hurry (And Don’t Know Why).” The group has described bringing these familiar songs to life in their own style as a lot of fun.

The Story Behind “My Maria”

One of the standout songs featured on the collection is “My Maria,” a track with a history that stretches back well before Brooks & Dunn made it a country chart-topper.

B. W. Stevenson originally released the song in 1973. His version became a commercial success, reaching No. 9 on the US pop chart.

More than two decades later, Brooks & Dunn introduced the song to a new generation of country listeners with their 1996 rendition. Their version proved even more successful on the country charts, climbing to No. 1 in the United States.

The song went on to become the No. 1 country song of 1996, according to Billboard, and earned the duo their second Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Vocal Group or Duo.

Brooks & Dunn’s interpretation helped establish “My Maria” as one of the defining country hits of that year, making it a fitting choice for Home Free’s celebration of the decade.
