Glasgow Man, 29, Wins £1 Million After 15 Years Sleeping On His Gran’s Sofa Following Childhood Tragedy
Kieran McLaughlin’s £1 million jackpot has changed everything. After losing both parents before adulthood and spending 15 years sharing his grandmother’s home with his twin brother, the 29-year-old Glasgow man can finally afford a place of his own. But his plans for the life-changing fortune go far beyond buying a house.

A Childhood Shaped By Loss, And 15 Years Without A Bed Of His Own
For Kieran McLaughlin, winning £1 million on ITV’s Win Win with Postcode Lottery means more than becoming a millionaire. It marks the end of a chapter that began with devastating family losses and years of financial struggle.
Kieran and his twin brother, Kane, lost their mother when they were just eight years old. Five years later, their father died, leaving the boys orphaned at only 13.
Their grandmother, May, took them in. Nearly 16 years later, Kieran, now 29, is still living under her roof, sleeping on one of the two sofas alongside his brother.
Speaking to The Mirror, he reflected on how difficult it had been to get ahead financially.
“I’ve lived with my Gran since I was about 13. She took me in, and my brother and I each sleep on one of the two couches. It’s insane to think that I’ve slept on a couch for 15 years. It’s just mad.”
Despite working hard to save for a property, getting onto the housing ladder had remained a challenge.
Now, that struggle is finally within reach of ending.
“With the money, I can obviously just go and buy a house. I’ve been saving for a house, believe me, I’ve been saving. But it’s just so hard.”

Six Days Of Work A Week Could Soon Be A Thing Of The Past
Before his ITV victory, Kieran was juggling two jobs to make ends meet.
He works as a civil servant from Monday to Friday, then spends his Saturdays working as a bridal and event make-up artist. The demanding schedule has left him working six days out of seven.
His approach to the second job, however, has never been purely about money.
“I don’t really do the make-up for the income. I actually do it just for fun because I love being a part of somebody’s wedding and making them feel special. I think I’ll try to focus more on that.”
With £1 million in the bank, Kieran can finally consider a different balance between work and the things he genuinely enjoys.
He is thinking about going part-time in the civil service, giving him more freedom to pursue his passion for make-up artistry without the pressure of working nearly every day.
For someone who has spent years carefully saving and working to secure a better future, the freedom to choose how he spends his time may prove just as valuable as the money itself.

He Was Afraid To Tell His 83-Year-Old Gran About The Win
Kieran’s grandmother was the person who took him and Kane in after their father died. Now, with the family facing a potentially life-changing windfall, he had one particularly delicate conversation to navigate.
Following his victory on Saturday, October 31, Kieran was asked who he would tell first.
His answer revealed just how much he was thinking about May’s reaction.
“I’m scared to tell my Gran because I feel like I’m going to give her a heart attack. She’s 83, so I need to kind of ease it into conversation.”
He joked that dropping the news on her too suddenly could be dangerous.
“I can’t just disrupt her peace and kill off my Gran when I win £1,000,000 pounds.”
Behind the humour was a clear sign of how much his grandmother means to him. After everything she had done for the twins, Kieran was already thinking carefully about how to share the extraordinary news with her.

His Twin Brother Will Get A Significant Share Of The Fortune
Kieran has no intention of keeping the entire jackpot to himself.
His twin brother, Kane, has been asking about his potential winnings every week before Kieran appeared on the show. Now that the money is real, Kieran plans to follow through on his promise to share it.
“Every single week before I went to play on the show, he would ask me, ‘What are you going to give me when you win?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know. I’m going to think about it.’”
His decision is now made.
“So, I will give him a good chunk of money. He’s my twin, I’ve spent my whole life with him, and I just want to give him what I’ve got as well.”
Kieran already has a practical gift in mind. Kane’s work van has broken down, so he is considering buying his brother a replacement.
Rather than treating his win as a personal escape from years of hardship, Kieran wants to make sure the people closest to him benefit too.
The brothers also have another trip to look forward to. Kieran intends to take Kane on a Florida getaway, where they have relatives.
A Caribbean Cruise With His Boyfriend Is Already Planned
Before the Florida trip and the house hunt, Kieran has a luxury Caribbean cruise on the calendar with his boyfriend, Reece, who is in his final year of nursing studies.
The timing could hardly be more convenient.
“He’s coming on the Caribbean cruise, and then he starts his eight-week placement two days afterwards – it’s such good timing.”
For Kieran, the cruise will be an opportunity to celebrate a victory that still feels difficult to comprehend.
After years of financial pressure, he can now look forward to a holiday without having to approach every expense with the same caution that once defined his life.
His First Big Purchase Will Be A House — And His Next Move Will Be Financial Advice
Despite the temptation to spend freely, Kieran already has a clear order of priorities.
Buying a home comes first.
“I’ll buy a house straight away,” he declared.
But he also recognises that suddenly having £1 million requires careful decisions. Having spent much of his adult life worrying about money, he wants professional guidance before making further financial commitments.
“I’m usually so scared of spending money, so the second thing I’ll do will definitely be to get a financial adviser.”
The combination of immediate plans and financial caution suggests Kieran is determined to make the money last, rather than allow the excitement of winning to dictate every decision.
He Knew He Could Win From The Very Beginning
Kieran’s victory was the culmination of six weeks of competition on Win Win with Postcode Lottery, presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.
He ultimately defeated fellow contestant Sabrina to claim the £1 million grand prize.
Remarkably, he says he had believed he could win from the moment he auditioned.
“From my audition, I said, ‘I know I have what it takes to win the £1million. I can see myself in the final.’”
Looking back, he admitted that his confidence might have seemed excessive.
“I’m either delusional or overly confident, or maybe I’m both because I’ve done it.”
His prediction proved correct, turning that early confidence into a life-changing result.
Kieran also correctly anticipated that people who won such a substantial amount of money would often want to share it with others, rather than simply spend it all on holidays or buying rounds at the pub.
For him, sharing the fortune with Kane is not an afterthought. It is part of what winning means.
An Emotional Finale He Will Never Forget
Although Kieran had believed in his chances, the final moments of the competition were far more overwhelming than he had expected.
He described the experience as the “best six weeks of my life”, but admitted that the conclusion was intensely emotional.
“I felt so nervous, clearly, because I was crying like every five minutes. I could barely stand up.”
The relationships he formed with the other contestants made the victory even more complicated. According to Kieran, the atmosphere throughout the competition was filled with kindness and mutual support.
“Every single contestant that has walked through the door has been one of the nicest people ever. Nobody has ever been ungrateful. Everybody’s so loving and caring. They’re so kind.”
He insisted that his happiness at winning did not diminish his feelings for the other competitors.
“I would have been so happy if it had been anybody else that won, from the bottom of my heart.”
It was a deeply emotional end to six weeks that had brought him closer to a prize he had once only imagined.
“Hearing The Word Millionaire Is Crazy”
Even after securing the jackpot, Kieran is still coming to terms with what it means to have that amount of money.
For someone who grew up facing profound loss and spent years working six days a week while saving for a home, the scale of the win is difficult to put into words.
“Hearing the word millionaire is crazy. That money is insane. People don’t see that amount of money where I’m from. It’s actually mind-blowing.”
He admitted that the experience still feels surreal.
“I genuinely feel like I’m dreaming, but I also feel like I deserve it. It’s crazy to try to put it into words.”
Now, his immediate future looks very different. A first home, more time for his passion, a Caribbean cruise with Reece, a Florida trip with Kane and financial support for his twin brother are all on the horizon.
After 15 years of sleeping on his grandmother’s sofa, Kieran McLaughlin has finally won the chance to build a life on his own terms — and he is determined to bring his family along with him.
