A Different World Sequel Series

Hillman College is opening its doors to a new generation, but some very familiar faces are coming back with them. Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming A Different World sequel series, offering the clearest look yet at how the beloved sitcom’s legacy will continue.

All 10 episodes will arrive on Netflix on Thursday, September 24, with the story centered on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original favorites Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne.

Played by Maleah Joi Moon, Deborah arrives at Hillman — the same college attended by her parents — ready to discover what life there will mean for her. But while the campus may be familiar to longtime viewers, Deborah and her classmates are preparing to create an entirely new chapter.

Deborah Wayne begins her own Hillman story

The trailer follows Deborah as she settles into college, meets her roommates and begins building a new circle of friends.

Netflix describes Deborah as a free spirit who enjoys being in the spotlight and has a big heart, although she is still working out exactly which direction she wants her life to take.

The connection to her famous parents remains unmistakable. Jasmine Guy returns as Whitley, while Kadeem Hardison reprises his role as Dwayne. Deborah is even seen wearing her father’s distinctive glasses as she and her friends embrace their lives as young, gifted and talented Black students.

But Whitley and Dwayne aren’t the only familiar faces returning.

Jada Pinkett Smith appears again as Lena James, while original series producer and director Debbie Allen reprises her role as Dr. Langhorne. In the new footage, Dr. Langhorne can be seen offering Deborah some valuable guidance as she adjusts to her new surroundings.

Meet Hillman’s new generation

Deborah will share the spotlight with a new group of students representing different experiences of Black college life.

Alijah Kai plays Rashida Duvall, a first-generation student majoring in criminal justice, while Cornell Young IV stars as Shaquille Johnson, a five-star athlete confronting questions of legacy.

Jordan Aaron Hall portrays Amir Rodale, a perceptive psychology major who finds it easier to help other people with their problems than confront his own.

Kennedi Reece joins the ensemble as Hazel Henry, a church-raised young woman from a small town who begins reconsidering and defining her values for herself.

Chibuikem Uche plays Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur attempting to find the confidence to pursue his creative ambitions.

Together with Deborah, they form the new group at the center of Hillman’s next era.

More original stars are returning

Netflix is also bringing back several other characters from the original A Different World.

Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks, Darryl M. Bell reprises Ron Johnson, Charnele Brown is back as Kimberly Reese, and Jenifer Lewis once again plays Dorothy Dandridge Davenport.

They join Guy, Hardison, Pinkett Smith and Allen in connecting the sequel directly to the series that came before it.

The mixture of returning alumni and incoming students appears designed to preserve Hillman’s history while allowing the younger cast to establish identities and relationships of their own.

The sequel will look different from the original

While the new series remains rooted in Hillman College and the HBCU experience, its production style represents a notable departure from the original sitcom.

A Different World was filmed as a traditional multi-camera comedy. The Netflix continuation instead uses a single-camera format and is being produced without a studio audience.

The new series is built around the traditions, humor and nuances of life at an HBCU, while Netflix describes the project as a hopeful dramedy filled with heart and centered unapologetically on the richness and complexity of the Black experience.

The revival is also receiving a new version of its theme song, performed by Brandy.

Hillman prepares for its next chapter

The original A Different World created an enduring television world around Hillman College, and the sequel is clearly leaning into that history rather than leaving it behind.

This time, however, Deborah Wayne and her classmates will have their own friendships, ambitions, conflicts and college experiences to navigate.

With Whitley, Dwayne, Lena, Freddie and other familiar characters returning alongside them, Netflix’s sequel brings two generations of Hillman together as the incoming class prepares to make the campus their own.
