“THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A MOMENT SAVANNAH GUTHRIE SHARED WITH HER MOM.” As Savannah begins an exciting new chapter with NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show, fans are celebrating her return to the spotlight. But behind the smiles and behind-the-scenes photos is a heartbreaking reality: her mother, Nancy, remains missing. Many viewers were left emotional seeing Savannah move forward while still carrying such a painful uncertainty.

What To Know

  • Savannah Guthrie is currently absent from Today as she begins production meetings for NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show, which she will host.
  • During her break, Guthrie visited her colleague Carson Daly on the set of The Voice in Los Angeles.
  • Filming for Wordle was delayed due to the disappearance of Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, earlier this year.

Savannah Guthrie is currently off from Today, but that didn’t stop her from running into one of her colleagues during her break.

On the Wednesday, June 17, episode of Today, Craig Melvin explained that Guthrie was absent from the NBC morning show because she is “starting production meetings on the Wordle game show, coming to NBC this fall.”

Guthrie gave fans a few behind-the-scenes sneak peeks via her Instagram Story on Wednesday. “Coming soon,” she wrote alongside a pic of a sign featuring a fake Wordle puzzle spelling out the word hello. She posted yellow and green heart emojis alongside another sign bearing the show’s name and her initials.

In another post, Guthrie revealed that in between Wordle production meetings, she took the time to pay Today‘s Carson Daly a visit on The Voice set. “When in LA, see your bestie @carsondaly,” she captioned a sweet photo the two snapped backstage at the NBC competition series.

Guthrie even got to sit in one of the coaches’ spinning chairs. “In @carsondaly’s house,” she wrote alongside the photo.

Daly has hosted The Voice since it premiered back in 2011. That same year, Guthrie joined the Today family as a third hour co-host. Daly, for his part, has appeared on Today since 2013.

News broke in October 2025 that NBC had tapped Guthrie to host a new game show inspired by the New York Times online game Wordle. Executive producer Jimmy Fallon stopped by Today on May 11 to officially announce the series, as well as confirm Guthrie’s role as host.

“We were looking, and we were like, ‘Who’s the perfect host for this? We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it,’” Fallon gushed. “And we did the pilot, and you are amazing, by the way.”

Guthrie, who has been a Wordle fan for many years, shared, “It’s fun how they’ve put it together, too. It’s, like, super-fast-paced and fun, and it’s a great family game. I love a game and a show that you can watch with your kids, and it’s fun, and you feel like they’re learning something.”

Savannah also revealed that the series was originally scheduled to start shooting in March, but filming was delayed following her mother Nancy Guthrie‘s disappearance. (Nancy was reported missing from her Arizona home in February, and the investigation remains ongoing.)

“I just want to say a quick thank you to NBC and to Jimmy and his production company and The New York Times and Studio Universal because when everything happened with me and my family, they just stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait for you,’” Savannah stated. “And Hollywood is a really tough business, as you know, and I didn’t expect that. And I just want to say thank you. It means so much to me.”
