Ellis Season 2 Brings Sharon D Clarke’s Brilliant Detective Back for Darker Cases — With a Major Shift in Her Partnership With DS Harper

DCI Ellis is back on the road, stepping into police investigations that have stalled, fractured or simply gone badly wrong — and this time, the cases aren’t the only source of uncertainty.

The hit British detective drama Ellis returned for its second season in March 2026, with three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D Clarke reprising her role as the formidable DCI Ellis and Outlander star Andrew Gower returning as DS Chet Harper. The new run consists of four hour-long episodes, structured as two investigations unfolding across two episodes each.

The format that helped distinguish the first season remains intact: Ellis and Harper are sent into struggling investigations across northern England, often arriving at police stations where local officers aren’t particularly pleased to see them.

But Season 2 also pushes their relationship forward, introduces new tensions around Ellis’s personal life and brings in an extensive guest cast that includes Mark Addy, Stephen Tompkinson, John Hollingworth and Dorothea Myer-Bennett.

DCI Ellis Returns to the Cases Other Detectives Can’t Solve

Ellis isn’t attached to one town or police station.

Instead, her expertise is deployed when investigations are failing and local teams need outside intervention. She arrives, studies what has gone wrong and begins asking the questions that others have overlooked — even when doing so puts her immediately at odds with the officers already working the case.

That traveling structure has been fundamental to Ellis since its debut.

Season 1 consisted of three feature-length mysteries, with Ellis and Harper moving between different communities and police forces. Season 2 retains that idea while changing the format to four hour-long installments covering two separate cases.

For Andrew Gower, that constantly changing environment remains an important part of the show’s identity. He has described the cross-country element as one of the features that makes Ellis distinctive.

Each new destination also places Ellis in an uncomfortable position.

She isn’t simply trying to identify a killer. She must quickly understand the community surrounding the crime while navigating police departments that can be defensive about an outsider examining their mistakes.

Sharon D Clarke Is Once Again at the Center of the Drama

Clarke’s DCI Ellis is an exceptionally capable murder detective from London whose intelligence and experience have made her the person senior officers call when another investigation needs rescuing.

But her authority doesn’t guarantee respect.

Ellis regularly encounters assumptions and prejudice connected to her race, age and gender. Rather than allowing those attitudes to distract her, she concentrates on the evidence and the people involved in the case.

That tension was one of the defining aspects of the first season.

Clarke previously described Ellis as a woman who has needed enormous strength of character to survive professionally, explaining that the detective has learned to focus on the investigation rather than the hostility surrounding her.

The performance helped establish the drama quickly with audiences. According to 5, the first series launched with more than 2.4 million viewers in October 2024. It averaged approximately 2.3 million viewers during its three-week run, while its finale consolidated to 2.4 million. Across linear television, the series eventually reached 4.3 million people, with another 2.1 million through streaming.

The broadcaster also described Ellis as the UK’s first Black solo female-led detective series.

Ellis and Harper’s Partnership Is Changing

Andrew Gower returns as DS Chet Harper, the detective who has become Ellis’s trusted right-hand man.

When viewers first met Harper at Hanmore station, his world was considerably smaller. He had spent much of his career working around the same people and in familiar surroundings.

Working with Ellis changed that.

Their relationship gradually evolved into something resembling a mentor-and-apprentice partnership, although Harper has never simply followed Ellis silently. His willingness to voice thoughts that Ellis might leave unsaid has become an important part of their investigative dynamic.

By Season 2, however, their partnership has reached a more complicated point.

Ellis’s evolving relationship with her daughter Grace creates uncertainty about what comes next, particularly for Harper. If Ellis’s priorities change, his own career could be affected.

Gower acknowledged that uncomfortable reality when discussing the new episodes, describing Harper’s concerns as somewhat selfish because his professional future has become so closely connected to Ellis.

It adds a subtle personal threat underneath the murder investigations: Ellis and Harper have finally developed an effective partnership, but neither can assume it will continue indefinitely.

DC Kate Trent Has a Bigger Role This Time

Charlotte McCurry also returns as DC Kate Trent, who first appeared during Season 1.

Some time has passed since viewers last saw her, and Kate is now pregnant — news that particularly surprises Harper.

More importantly, she is working more closely with Ellis and Harper during the new investigations, expanding the central team beyond the partnership that dominated much of the first season.

McCurry’s previous television credits include Dalgliesh, Say Nothing, World on Fire and Hope Street.

Allison Harding also reprises her role as ACC Alison Leighton, Ellis’s boss and the senior officer responsible for deciding where her particular investigative talents are needed next.

The First Case Brings Ellis Into Another Troubled Investigation

Episodes 1 and 2 introduce an extensive group of new characters surrounding Ellis’s first investigation of the season.

John Hollingworth appears as DS Malcolm Oliver, while Sasha Desouza-Willock plays PC Suravi Kareem.

The guest ensemble also includes Joel Morris as Joseph Ward, James Doran as Peter Barron, Kirsty Bushell as Natasha Scope, Hannah Chinn as Avery Barron and Niamh Blackshaw as Jade Bell.

Cariad Lloyd appears as Pippa Ellerson, with Keir Charles as Chris Ellerson and Elliot Douglas as Archie Ellerson. Sonny Walker plays Kelvin Jones, Kyle Ndukuba appears as Bola Ladipo and Faolan Morgan plays the landlord.

The large ensemble continues the show’s procedural format, with each investigation introducing an almost entirely new community of suspects, witnesses and police officers around Ellis and Harper.

That rotating cast is essential to the drama because Ellis is never operating on comfortable territory. Every case forces her to understand a new set of relationships while determining which assumptions made by the original investigators need to be challenged.

Mark Addy and Stephen Tompkinson Join the Second Mystery

The guest cast changes again for Episodes 3 and 4.

Game of Thrones star Mark Addy plays Elliot Quinn, while Dorothea Myer-Bennett appears as Lucy Quinn. Matilda Freeman plays Mackenzie Quinn and Sonny Ashbourne Serkis appears as Joshua Quinn.

Stephen Tompkinson joins the story as DCI Chalmers.

The second investigation also features Lisa Ambalavanar as Abi Marshall, Judy Flynn as Wendy Pyke, Jack Bandeira as Tim Selby, Natalia Kostrzewa as Ludmilla Nowak and Sophie Stanton as Tina Marshall.

Florian Rafuna, Julia Krynke, Karyna Khymchuk and Caroline O’Neill round out the guest ensemble as Christian Kalonas, Celina Pusch, Katja Vogel and Rosie Watts respectively.

The rotating casts allow Ellis to effectively reset its world with every investigation without losing the continuing relationship between its two central detectives.

Season 1 Established the Show’s Unusual Procedural Formula

The first series arrived in October 2024 with three feature-length episodes.

Each installment dropped Ellis and Harper into a different investigation, introducing a new location and group of characters.

The opening story began with the death of 18-year-old Rowan Edwards and the disappearance of his girlfriend, Maggie Bradley.

Freya Hannan-Mills played Maggie, while Daire Scully appeared as Rowan. Kaye Wragg played Maggie’s mother Linda, Michael Wildman appeared as her stepfather Stephen Mason and Chris Reilly portrayed local DCI Jim Belmont.

The episode also featured Catherine Walker, Wayne Foskett, Beau Gadsdon, Tallulah Evans and Charlotte McCurry.

The second mystery shifted to the disappearance of police officer Jenny Rawler.

Jenny had been only days away from submitting a complaint alleging bullying by colleagues when she vanished, placing Ellis inside an investigation involving the police themselves.

That episode’s cast included Aoibhéann McCann, Jonathan Harden, Tim Dutton, Paul Mallon, Stephanie Levi-John and Orla Charlton.

Season 1’s final investigation then took Ellis and Harper to Brindleton, where newlyweds Rachel and Oz Hoffman had disappeared.

Amanda Drew appeared as DCI Val Cotton, with Josh Bolt as DI Archie Dent. Charley Webb, Charlie de Melo, Michael Simkins, Rina Mahoney and David Sterne were among the supporting cast.

The constant movement meant audiences never knew what kind of police force Ellis would encounter next — cooperative, incompetent, defensive or actively hostile.

Season 1 Became a Significant Ratings Success for 5

The decision to bring Ellis back wasn’t surprising given the performance of its first run.

Its October 31, 2024 launch drew 2.4 million viewers and a 14.9% audience share, according to figures released by 5. Across its Thursday-night run, the drama averaged 2.3 million viewers and a 13.5% share.

The finale consolidated to 2.4 million viewers and became 5’s most popular programme across all genres during November.

The complete series ultimately reached 4.3 million viewers through linear television and another 2.1 million via streaming. It also ranked No. 1 on 5’s streaming platform during November 2024, accounting for 13% of streaming viewing that month.

Those numbers led 5 and Acorn TV to officially announce Season 2 in May 2025, with Clarke and Gower immediately confirmed to return.

The Second Season Changes the Format Without Losing the Formula

There is one notable difference between the original commission and the version of Season 2 that eventually reached viewers.

When the renewal was announced in May 2025, 5 and Acorn TV initially described the second series as three 120-minute installments.

By its March 2026 broadcast, however, the UK schedule consisted of four approximately hour-long episodes, with Episodes 1 and 2 forming one case and Episodes 3 and 4 another.

The underlying concept remains unchanged.

Ellis and Harper arrive after other detectives have struggled. They must quickly understand a new community, confront resistance from the officers already involved and work out which details have been ignored.

Meanwhile, Ellis continues dealing with a professional world where being the smartest detective in the room doesn’t necessarily mean everyone wants to listen to her.

Andrew Gower Is Already Open to More Ellis

Season 2 may have concluded its UK broadcast in March, but Gower has made his feelings about continuing the partnership clear.

Asked whether he would return if Ellis received a third season, the actor gave an immediate yes, pointing to both his experience working with Clarke and his desire to continue developing Harper and Ellis.

For now, however, the second season gives viewers four more episodes of the formula that made the drama successful in the first place: complicated murders, unfamiliar towns, resistant police departments and one exceptionally sharp detective arriving to find the answers everyone else has missed.

For British crime-drama fans, the appeal is straightforward. Ellis combines the case-of-the-week satisfaction of a traditional procedural with an ongoing partnership that continues changing underneath the investigations — and Sharon D Clarke remains firmly at the center of it all.
