Film Club: BBC’s New Six-Part Rom-Com Is Set To Be The Perfect Autumn Binge

Noa and Evie watch films every Friday

A Friday-night movie ritual is about to become something much more complicated in the BBC’s new six-part romantic drama Film Club.

Starring The White Lotus and Sex Education favourite Aimee Lou Wood alongside Nabhaan Rizwan, the series follows two best friends whose carefully established routine is thrown into uncertainty when one of them gets a life-changing job offer.

With Suranne Jones and Adolescence breakout Owen Cooper also joining the cast, Film Club mixes romance, friendship, family tensions and a love of cinema into a story designed for a cosy autumn binge.

A Friday Night Tradition At The Heart Of The Story

Who stars in Film Club?

Wood plays Evie, a passionate film lover who has barely left her home for six months after what the official synopsis describes as a “wobble.”

Her escape comes every Friday night.

Evie transforms her mother’s garage to suit whatever film she and her friends have chosen, creating a small world where she can forget about everything outside for a few hours.

Her closest friend is Noa, played by Rizwan, and their weekly movie nights have become an important part of both their lives.

But one particular Friday threatens to change their routine completely.

Noa has landed his dream job — except it will take him to the other side of the country.

Suddenly, the two friends are forced to confront a possibility they have managed to avoid: what if their relationship has already become something more than friendship?

Aimee Lou Wood Co-Created The Series

The show has reportedly been cancelled

Film Club is not simply another acting project for Wood.

The actress also co-created the series and co-wrote it with Ralph Davis, whose previous credits include House of the Dragon, Big Boys and Othello.

The story explores the uncomfortable space between friendship and romance, while also looking at family, love and the struggle between following your head and listening to your heart.

Much of that emotional conflict plays out against the eccentric family environment surrounding Evie.

Suranne Jones stars as Suz, Evie’s fiercely protective single mother, while Liv Hill plays her sister Izzie. Adam Long appears as Josh, Suz’s boyfriend and the man who has taken on the role of the household’s unofficial father figure.

Owen Cooper Joins The Ensemble

Adolescence star Owen Cooper plays Evie's neighbour Callum

One of the most recognisable young faces in the cast is Owen Cooper, who plays Evie’s neighbour Callum following his breakout role in Adolescence.

Cooper is joined by Arian Nik and Fola Evans-Akingbola, who play film club regulars Kam and Samantha.

Ralph Davis also appears on screen as Dominic, the newest member of the group, while Lisa McGrillis, known for Rivals and Sex Education, plays Steph, Suz’s friend and neighbour.

Together, the ensemble gives Evie a close-knit circle of people as the comfortable little world she has created around her Friday movie nights begins to shift.

When Friendship Starts To Feel Like Something More

The central tension of Film Club comes from a deceptively simple question: what happens when your best friend might also be the person you want to fall in love with?

For Evie, cinema has provided a safe retreat from the outside world. Noa has always been part of that escape, turning their weekly tradition into something she can rely on.

His new job changes the equation.

With distance suddenly on the horizon, the pair can no longer simply carry on as they have before. They must decide whether their friendship is enough — or whether there has been something deeper between them all along.

That friends-to-lovers storyline sits alongside the show’s family drama and more personal exploration of Evie’s struggles, giving Film Club more emotional weight than a straightforward romantic comedy.
