The Doll: Netflix’s Polish Period Drama Is Winning Over Viewers

Netflix has given one of Poland’s most celebrated literary works a lavish new adaptation — and viewers are already finding plenty to admire in The Doll.

Based on Bolesław Prus’ classic 19th-century novel, the six-part Polish drama follows Stanisław Wokulski, a self-made merchant whose desire for wealth and social advancement becomes entangled with his overwhelming feelings for Izabela Łęcka, a young aristocrat.

The series premiered on Netflix on September 16, 2026, with all six episodes released at once.

A Story Of Love, Class And Obsession

At the centre of The Doll is Stanisław Wokulski, played by Tomasz Schuchardt.

After making his fortune, Wokulski returns to Poland with one overriding ambition: to win the hand of Izabela Łęcka, portrayed by Sandra Drzymalska.

But their relationship is complicated by the enormous divide between them. Wokulski has built his position through his own efforts, while Izabela belongs to an aristocratic world governed by wealth, status and rigid social expectations.

Prus’ The Doll was first published in the 19th century and is regarded as an important work of Polish literature.
