Sarah Lancashire is set for a busy run on Netflix, with the Happy Valley star returning as Mrs Reed in the highly anticipated second season of Black Doves while also preparing to lead another dark drama, Witch Hunt.

The news comes as Netflix has released the first trailer for Black Doves Season 2, giving fans a new look at the next chapter of the spy thriller starring Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw and Lancashire.

The six-episode series returns to Netflix on November 5, 2026, nearly two years after its first season debuted in December 2024.

Black Doves Returns With A More Dangerous Mission

The first season introduced Knightley as Helen Webb, a politician’s wife living a secret double life as a spy for the clandestine Black Doves organisation.

After her secret lover is murdered, Helen is forced to confront the possibility that her identity has been exposed. Her old friend Sam Young, played by Ben Whishaw, is brought back into her life to protect her while they investigate who was responsible and why.

Season 2 picks up after the events of the previous Christmas, with Helen facing an even more complicated situation. Her husband Wallace, played by Andrew Buchan, is preparing to become Prime Minister, placing Helen closer than ever to the centre of government — and making the risks surrounding her secret life even greater.

Meanwhile, her enigmatic handler Mrs Reed, portrayed by Sarah Lancashire, becomes caught in a ruthless attempt to undermine her position within the Black Doves.

That puts Helen and Reed in an increasingly precarious position just as Helen reunites with Sam, who has fallen far from his former life as a high-end hitman.

Netflix describes the new season as a story of shattered trust, weaponised loyalties and difficult sacrifices as Helen and Sam return to old friends and enemies in their search for answers.

Sarah Lancashire’s Mrs Reed Faces Trouble

The new trailer puts Lancashire’s Mrs Reed at the centre of the growing danger.

As Helen adjusts to her new position as the Prime Minister’s wife, Reed warns her to remain convincing in her double life. But Reed herself is facing a threat from within the organisation she has helped control.

Netflix’s Joe Barton, who created, wrote and executive produced the series, has described Helen as being at the pinnacle of her position while Reed’s disappearance leaves her suddenly without her professional ally.

The season also expands the show’s cast. Returning stars include Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Agnes O’Casey and Molly Chesworth, while new additions include Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay, Sam Riley, Neve Campbell, Sylvia Hoeks, Goran Kostic and Samuel Barnett.

Mod plays Laila, a Black Doves agent sent to assist Helen, while Ceesay portrays Black Doves executive Mr. Conteh. Riley joins as Patrick, an emissary from a mysterious organisation, and Campbell plays US defence envoy Cecile Mason.

The actress is also set to lead Witch Hunt, a new drama written by Abi Morgan, the creator of The Split. The story centres on August Howell, a woman descended from the so-called “Witch of Cambridge” who is released after spending three decades in prison for drowning her three young daughters.

Her return divides the community, but the situation becomes even more disturbing when a suspected modern-day witch hunt develops in the university town.

Police eventually turn to August’s surviving daughter, Professor Wren Howell, an academic and investigative psychologist, to help find a killer as old resentments and local folklore collide.

For Lancashire, the project marks a reunion with Morgan more than 25 years after they last worked together.

The actress said she was thrilled to be working with Morgan, Jane Featherstone, SISTER Pictures and Netflix, describing the story as compelling and praising the complexity of August as a character.

Morgan, meanwhile, said she had been looking for the right role for Lancashire for years and believed August was the part she had been waiting for.

She described Witch Hunt as a dark, emotionally charged story about a mother released after decades in prison and the daughter she left behind, blending gothic horror with a modern thriller and contemporary witchcraft.

Two Very Different Netflix Roles

The two projects offer Lancashire very different characters.

In Black Doves, she plays the calculating and enigmatic Mrs Reed, a powerful figure operating inside a secret spy organisation.
