Netflix Renews Legends for Season 2 as Steve Coogan and Tom Burke Return to the Dangerous World of Britain’s Real-Life Undercover Customs Operations

Netflix has officially handed Legends a second season, bringing Steve Coogan and Tom Burke back for another chapter of the acclaimed British crime thriller inspired by the extraordinary undercover work of ordinary Customs officers in 1990s Britain. The renewal was confirmed on August 24, with production on the new season scheduled to begin in 2027.

The news answers one of the biggest questions left hanging after the six-part drama arrived on Netflix in May. Season 1 followed an unlikely group of civil servants who were pulled from their everyday lives, given carefully constructed false identities and sent deep undercover to infiltrate some of Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs.

Those fabricated identities were known as “legends” — and maintaining them could mean the difference between completing the mission and having their cover blown.

The true story behind Legends

Created and written by Neil Forsyth, whose previous credits include The Gold and Guilt, Legends takes inspiration from a remarkable chapter in British law enforcement history.

In the early 1990s, HM Customs and Excise was struggling to contain the flow of illegal drugs entering Britain. Authorities responded by assembling a covert team with an extraordinary assignment: infiltrate the criminal organizations responsible for bringing drugs into the country.

What made the operation particularly unusual was the background of the people being sent undercover.

They were not seasoned spies. They were ordinary Customs employees who underwent training before being required to create entirely new personas and enter environments where a single mistake could expose who they really were.

Season 1 explored the enormous psychological pressure of living those double lives while following the team deeper into the criminal underworld.

Steve Coogan and Tom Burke will return

Tom Burke leads the series as Guy, while Steve Coogan plays Don, the veteran Customs investigator responsible for recruiting the unconventional undercover unit.

The first season also featured Hayley Squires as Kate, Tom Hughes as Carter, Aml Ameen as Bailey, Jasmine Blackborow as Erin, Douglas Hodge as Blake, Johnny Harris as Eddie and Charlotte Ritchie as Sophie, among a larger ensemble cast.

Netflix has confirmed Burke and Coogan will return for Season 2, with the new story once again following the undercover operatives and their increasingly dangerous work.

At the end of the first season, the team had successfully cracked an international case and returned to their ordinary lives.

Their time undercover, however, is far from finished.

The next chapter will reunite the unlikely team and send them back into the secretive world they thought they had escaped.

Netflix says the outside world remains unaware of what these apparently ordinary people are actually doing, allowing Season 2 to continue exploring one of the drama’s most intriguing ideas: what happens when someone has to maintain an entirely different identity while operating among criminals who cannot discover the truth.

Forsyth has also indicated that the new season will push further into the late 1990s, when the work carried out by these undercover officers became increasingly dangerous and significant.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to tell a new story in the fascinating and unique world that Legends offers,” Forsyth said, adding that the new season will demonstrate just how “dangerous, thrilling, and important” their work became during that period.

Netflix puts its confidence behind the British thriller

The renewal forms part of a broader commitment from Netflix to several of its successful UK productions.

Alongside Legends, the streamer has confirmed another season of Steven Knight’s House of Guinness, while Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen has already secured a third season.

Netflix Vice President of UK Content Anne Mensah said audiences had embraced the returning shows, describing it as a pleasure to revisit their different worlds and thanking the actors, writers, directors, producers and crews behind them.

For Legends, that means a story inspired by extraordinary real operations will now have room to move beyond its original six episodes.

When could Legends Season 2 arrive?

There is one detail fans may find frustrating: the wait.

Netflix has confirmed that Season 2 is preparing to enter production in 2027, but the streamer has not announced a filming start date or release window.

That means any suggestion of a late-2027 or 2028 premiere remains speculation until Netflix provides further details.

For now, all six episodes of the first season are available worldwide on Netflix.

The undercover operation is officially continuing — and after sending ordinary Customs officers into Britain’s criminal underworld once, Legends is preparing to put them back behind their carefully constructed identities for an entirely new investigation.
