Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife Examines Mica Miller’s Final Years, Allegations of Coercive Control and the Questions Her Family Still Wants Answered

A new Netflix true-crime documentary is revisiting the deeply troubling story of Mica Miller, the 30-year-old South Carolina worship leader whose death in April 2024 became the focus of national attention after details emerged about the turmoil surrounding her marriage.

The three-part Death of the Pastor’s Wife retraces Mica’s life and relationship with her husband, John-Paul “JP” Miller, a Myrtle Beach pastor, using personal journals, text messages, home videos, church footage and interviews with people who knew her closely. The series also examines allegations of emotional abuse and coercive control, while following her family’s continuing effort to understand what happened in the period leading up to her death.

Mica’s death was officially ruled a suicide. John-Paul Miller has not been charged in connection with her death. He was, however, federally indicted in December 2025 on separate charges of cyberstalking Mica and making false statements to investigators. He pleaded not guilty, and the charges remain allegations unless proven in court.

Mica Miller’s Death Drew National Attention

Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024.

Although authorities ruled her death a suicide, attention surrounding the case intensified as information about the months preceding it became public.

According to Netflix, Mica had previously reported that she believed she was the victim of stalking and told police about her fears shortly before her death. Those circumstances became central to the public conversation surrounding the case and to her family’s push for answers.

Rather than focusing solely on the circumstances of her final day, Death of the Pastor’s Wife attempts to reconstruct the years that came before it.

Its filmmakers say they wanted Mica herself to remain at the center of the story.

“What stayed with us about Mica’s story was how hard she seemed to be fighting to be heard,” directors Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro said.

The filmmakers, whose previous work includes Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal and American Murder: Gabby Petito, said their intention was to examine Mica’s experiences closely while allowing her family and friends to describe the woman they knew.

From Teenage Worship Leader to Pastor’s Wife

Long before her death became the subject of headlines, Mica was known to those closest to her for her faith and musical ability.

Originally from Wichita, Kansas, she later moved with her family to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She became heavily involved in church life and developed into a worship leader while still young.

Her family attended Solid Rock Church, where John-Paul Miller served as pastor.

According to the documentary, Mica first met JP when she was 13. He was 15 years older than her.

Their relationship eventually developed while Mica was working as his assistant and JP was still married. The affair became a scandal within the church community, and Mica and JP later married in 2017.

The documentary then follows the deterioration of their marriage and Mica’s attempts to leave it.

Netflix describes its three episodes as charting a progression from their early relationship through growing questions about control within the marriage and, finally, Mica’s death and her family’s search for truth.

Mica Filed for Divorce Shortly Before Her Death

One of the most striking elements of the timeline comes during the final weeks of Mica’s life.

According to Netflix, Mica had resolved to leave the marriage and served JP with divorce papers in April 2024, two days before she died.

The documentary examines that period through the extensive personal archive Mica left behind.

Instead of relying exclusively on interviews conducted after her death, the filmmakers were given access by her family to videos spanning years of her life, along with her journals and other personal material.

Nason said the footage allowed the production to show Mica growing up in the church and to capture her relationship with music, worship and faith.

Her journals proved particularly important because they provided access to thoughts that Mica may not have shared openly with everyone around her.

With permission from Mica’s family, the filmmakers used voice-recreation technology to present portions of those writings in a voice approximating Mica’s intonation — an approach Nason and Gasparro had previously used while making American Murder: Gabby Petito.

Their goal, Gasparro explained, was to keep Mica’s own perspective as close to the center of the documentary as possible.

Her Family and Friends Speak About What They Witnessed

The three-part series also includes firsthand accounts from Mica’s siblings, sister-in-law, close friends and former members of Solid Rock Church.

Other participants include people who attempted to assist Mica during her marriage, among them a biblical counselor and the attorney she retained during her divorce proceedings.

An investigative journalist who examined questions surrounding the case also contributes.

According to executive producer Alana Goldstein, considerably more people were interviewed than ultimately appeared in the finished documentary.

The production eventually chose to concentrate heavily on Mica’s siblings because they had experienced much of the story alongside her.

The result is intended to be as much a portrait of Mica herself as an examination of the circumstances surrounding her death.

The Documentary Examines Coercive Control

A major theme running through Death of the Pastor’s Wife is coercive control.

The term describes a sustained pattern of behavior through which one person seeks to restrict another person’s independence and freedom, potentially involving psychological, emotional or financial manipulation.

Netflix says the documentary examines allegations of control and manipulation within Mica and JP’s relationship.

Executive producer Goldstein said the filmmakers wanted the series to explore the realities of emotional abuse and coercive control while remembering Mica as more than the circumstances surrounding her death.

The issue also extends beyond the documentary itself, as Mica’s family has advocated for greater legal recognition and awareness of coercive control.

John-Paul Miller Was Later Federally Indicted

The story took another major turn in December 2025.

A federal grand jury indicted John Paul Miller on two counts: cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina, prosecutors allege that beginning in November 2022, Miller subjected his estranged wife to unwanted and harassing communications that continued until her death.

The indictment alleges conduct including repeatedly contacting Mica, interfering with her finances and daily activities, having tracking devices placed on her vehicle, posting an intimate photograph without her consent and damaging her vehicle’s tires.

Federal prosecutors further allege that Miller subsequently made false statements to investigators concerning some of that conduct.

These are allegations, not findings of guilt.

Miller pleaded not guilty. He has not been charged with causing or otherwise being criminally responsible for Mica Miller’s death. The Department of Justice emphasizes that defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Miller declined to comment for the Netflix documentary.

Three Episodes Reconstruct the Story

Netflix has structured Death of the Pastor’s Wife as a compact three-episode limited series.

The first episode, “A Note From Your Pastor,” goes back to Mica’s teenage years and the beginnings of her connection with JP.

Episode two, “Helpmate,” focuses on the deterioration of their marriage and Mica’s efforts to break away.

The concluding chapter, “What Happened to Mica,” examines her death, issues raised by the case and her family’s continuing search for answers. The episodes run approximately 42, 48 and 44 minutes respectively.

That gives the entire documentary a runtime of just over two hours, but the filmmakers use the limited format to move between Mica’s personal story, her marriage, her faith and the broader questions raised by her experience.

Crucially, the documentary does not overturn the official determination concerning Mica’s death or present allegations against her husband as established facts.

Instead, it asks viewers to listen to Mica’s own words, examine the experiences described by those closest to her and consider the patterns of alleged control that preceded her death.

A Documentary Designed to Put Mica’s Voice First

Ultimately, the filmmakers say their central objective was not simply to create another mystery-driven true-crime series.

They wanted audiences to understand who Mica was before she became the subject of a nationally discussed case.

Through family memories, church recordings, home videos and private journals, Death of the Pastor’s Wife presents a woman remembered for her music, faith and personality while examining a relationship that those around her say became increasingly troubling.

That distinction is particularly important given the unresolved emotions surrounding the case.

Mica’s death was officially ruled a suicide. Her husband’s subsequent federal charges concern alleged conduct before her death and alleged statements to investigators — not responsibility for her death.

For Mica’s family and the filmmakers, however, the questions extend beyond criminal responsibility. The documentary asks what Mica was trying to communicate while she was alive, whether those warnings were adequately heard and what her experience can reveal about forms of abuse that are not always immediately visible.

Two years after her death, her family is still telling her story — and Death of the Pastor’s Wife gives Mica’s own words a central place within it.
