Hillman College is opening its doors to a new generation this fall, but the students arriving on campus will not be the only familiar part of the experience. Netflix’s A Different World sequel series premieres on September 24, bringing viewers back to the iconic fictional HBCU alongside several beloved characters from the original sitcom.

At the centre of the new story is Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. As the daughter of Hillman alumni Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, Deborah arrives at college carrying more than the usual pressures facing a freshman. She is determined to create an identity of her own while living with the expectations that come from being the child of two celebrated former students.
The newly released Season 1 trailer offers the clearest look yet at how the sequel will combine a fresh college story with the legacy of the original series.
Deborah Wayne begins her own Hillman journey

For Deborah, Hillman has been part of the conversation for practically her entire life.
Her parents, played once again by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy, have long encouraged her to attend their alma mater. Deborah enters the new school year optimistic and determined to prove that she can succeed there on her own terms.
“My parents have been pushing Hillman since before they knew my name,” Deborah says in the trailer. “I want to prove to them I can crush it.”
But university life quickly becomes more complicated than simply succeeding academically.
Deborah meets with academic adviser Dr. Langhorne, played by Debbie Allen, as she begins navigating the freedom, uncertainty and occasional chaos that comes with leaving home and entering college.
Showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride said it was important for Deborah to feel imperfect and relatable rather than arriving at Hillman with everything already figured out.
The character is allowed to be messy and uncertain as she gradually discovers where she belongs.
New friendships — and an old romance

While Dwayne and Whitley remain closely involved in their daughter’s life, Deborah begins building a community that belongs to her rather than her parents.
Among her new relationships is roommate Rashida, played by Alijah Kai.
Deborah also reconnects with Shaquille, played by Cornell Young IV, a rising football star with whom she shares a romantic past. Their families already have a connection as well: Shaquille is the son of Ron Johnson, once a Hillman classmate of Deborah’s parents.
Ron is again portrayed by original cast member Darryl M. Bell.
Rashida and Shaquille are joined by Hazel, Amir and Kojo, played by Kennedi Reece, Jordan Aaron Hall and Chibuikem Uche.
Together, the students experience the full rhythm of campus life — studying, partying, forming friendships, pursuing relationships and trying to understand who they want to become.
For Debbie Allen, that remains central to what A Different World represents: allowing young people to see themselves thriving on a college campus while experiencing friendship, romance and all the complications of growing up.
Original A Different World stars return

The sequel is not leaving Hillman’s past behind.
The trailer confirms the return of several major figures from the original series, including Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne, Jasmine Guy as Whitley, Debbie Allen as Dr. Langhorne and Darryl M. Bell as Ron.
Cree Summer, Jenifer Lewis and Jada Pinkett Smith are also reprising their roles.
Pinkett Smith returns as Lena, while the trailer offers a glimpse of her alongside Dwayne.
Allen explained that bringing back the original characters is intended to accomplish more than simply creating nostalgic moments. Their appearances also give longtime viewers an opportunity to discover what became of the people they followed during the original show.
“It’s not just nostalgia. It’s like, ‘Where are they now?’” Allen said.
The trailer additionally teases appearances from Summer Walker and Cliff “Method Man” Smith.
A new generation takes ownership of Hillman

Although Deborah arrives carrying the Wayne family legacy, the new series is ultimately about her discovering what Hillman means to her.
She must balance her parents’ expectations with new friendships, an old romantic connection and the freedom that comes with finally having the opportunity to make her own decisions.
Along the way, she begins finding the people who will define her college years and learning that being part of a Hillman legacy does not mean simply repeating the experiences of the generation that came before her.
With new students taking centre stage and original favourites returning to reveal where life has taken them, the sequel aims to connect two generations of A Different World while giving Deborah and her classmates a story of their own.
A Different World premieres September 24, exclusively on Netflix.
