Morgan Freeman’s New Western Thriller Reaches Major Milestone as Richard Gadd and More Stars Join the Cast
Morgan Freeman is preparing to return to the Western genre in Rode to Ruin, a new thriller bringing together an impressive ensemble led by Freeman, Michael Keaton and Laura Linney. The project has now added several notable names, including Emmy-winning Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd, as production moves forward ahead of its planned 2027 theatrical release.
Directed by Keaton, who also stars in the film, Rode to Ruin promises a story of revenge, fading memories and a dangerous secret buried in the past. The film is currently shooting in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with Angel set to distribute it in theaters in 2027.

Richard Gadd Joins the Cast as a Charismatic Gang Leader
According to Variety, Richard Gadd has joined the film as Clive McKinney, a young and charismatic gang leader searching for a rumoured fortune — and the man he believes destroyed his family.
Gadd became widely known for creating and starring in the Emmy-winning series Baby Reindeer. He has also appeared in HBO’s Half Man, bringing further attention to his work as a writer and performer.
The latest casting announcement also confirms the involvement of Bill Camp, known for Presumed Innocent, and Ray McKinnon, an Oscar-winning filmmaker and actor. Their roles have not yet been disclosed.
Chris Candy, Travis Hammer, Thom Rivera and Derek Hinkey have also joined the cast, expanding an ensemble that already includes several award-winning performers.
Morgan Freeman Returns to the Western Genre

Freeman’s involvement is particularly notable given how rarely he has appeared in Westerns over the past three decades.
His previous work in the genre includes Clint Eastwood’s acclaimed 1992 film Unforgiven and the 2005 drama An Unfinished Life. In Unforgiven, Freeman played Ned Logan, an ageing gunslinger who joins his longtime friend William Munny, portrayed by Eastwood, for one final job.
Now, Freeman takes on the role of Joseph Mulberry, an ageing outlaw whose deteriorating memory may hold the key to a decades-old mystery.
The actor’s return to this kind of story reunites him with Keaton, who plays the central lawman at the heart of the investigation. Laura Linney also stars in the film, adding another acclaimed performer to the principal cast.
A Forty-Year Search for a Killer

At the centre of Rode to Ruin is Henry Tillman, a retired U.S. Marshal played by Keaton. Haunted by his wife’s murder, Tillman has spent 40 years pursuing the person responsible.
His search eventually leads him to Mulberry, an outlaw whose fading memory complicates the investigation. As Tillman gets closer to the truth, he uncovers a buried secret that could put both men’s lives at risk.
The premise places the film at the intersection of a traditional Western pursuit and a psychological mystery, with the passage of time and the limits of memory playing important roles in the unfolding story.
Producer Praises the Film’s Expanding Ensemble

Producer Lori McCreary has welcomed the new additions, expressing excitement about bringing Gadd, Camp and McKinnon together with Keaton, Freeman and Linney.
Speaking to Variety, McCreary praised the newcomers for the depth and authenticity they bring to their performances, describing them as actors who can elevate every scene they appear in. She also highlighted how exciting it is to see their talents combined with those of the film’s established leading stars.
The growing cast adds further weight to a project that already boasts a mix of celebrated screen veterans and contemporary television talent.
A Western With a Psychological Edge

The film has also drawn comparisons to stories that explore memory, identity and the consequences of the past. MovieWeb writer Nick Bartlett noted similarities in its cinematic feel to Christopher Nolan’s Memento and the Cracker story “The Mad Woman in the Attic.”
While Rode to Ruin remains rooted in the Western genre, its focus on a decades-long investigation and an ageing outlaw struggling with memory suggests that the mystery will be central to its appeal.
With Michael Keaton directing and starring alongside Morgan Freeman and Laura Linney, and Richard Gadd, Bill Camp and Ray McKinnon now on board, Rode to Ruin is shaping up to be a notable addition to the upcoming Western thriller lineup.
The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas in 2027, although an exact release date has not yet been announced.
