‘Heart-pounding’ Jean-Claude Van Damme crime thriller surges into Netflix Top 10

A 2006 action thriller starring Jean-Claude Van Damme has found a new audience on Netflix, racking up more than nine million viewing hours and reaching No. 3 on the platform’s Global Top 10 film chart.

The Hard Corps follows Phillip Sauvage, an American soldier recovering from PTSD after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Van Damme plays the troubled veteran, who is recruited for a dangerous protection job after leaving the veterans hospital.

His assignment is to protect Wayne Barclay, a retired heavyweight champion who has reinvented himself as a businessman. The threat comes from notorious rap mogul Terrell Singletery, whose release from prison puts the Barclay family on edge.

Although The Hard Corps was released directly to DVD in the US rather than receiving a major theatrical run, the film has continued to attract positive reactions from viewers. Its current Netflix resurgence is giving the Noughties-era thriller another chance to find an audience.

Viewers call it ‘perfect entertainment’

The film has been receiving particularly strong praise on IMDb, with one viewer awarding it a full 10 out of 10.

Fans have highlighted its fast pace, action sequences and ensemble cast, with Vivica A. Fox also singled out for her performance. One viewer praised the dialogue, screenplay and choreography before describing the movie as the kind of heart-pounding Van Damme action they had hoped to see.

Another called it the best among Van Damme’s direct-to-DVD releases, while a separate viewer described it as one of his most enjoyable films in years and praised the martial arts-heavy action.

A further review summed up the appeal more simply, calling the movie “perfect entertainment” and highlighting its solid action and familiar Van Damme-style hero.

A dangerous protection mission

The story begins after Terrell Singletery, played by Viv Leacock, is released from prison.

His return creates serious concern for the Barclay family, particularly Wayne Barclay’s older sister and manager, Tamara, played by Vivica A. Fox. With Wayne now in Terrell’s sights, Tamara decides that additional security is necessary.

Wayne’s staff member Mullins, played by Peter James Bryant, turns to former Army colleague Clarence Bowden, played by Julian D. Christopher, for help.

Bowden then brings in Phillip Sauvage, whom he had mentored during their time in the Army. Sauvage becomes part of Wayne’s security detail, placing his military experience at the center of the increasingly dangerous situation.

A Noughties action thriller gets a second life

The Hard Corps was filmed in Vancouver and Bucharest and did not make a major impression with critics when it was first released. Viewers, however, have continued to defend the film, particularly its momentum and action.

One reviewer said the movie’s pace keeps it from becoming boring, while praising how enjoyable it can be when watched with friends.

Now, nearly two decades after its 2006 release, The Hard Corps is back in the spotlight thanks to Netflix. Sitting at No. 3 on the Global Top 10 film chart, the film is offering subscribers a dose of early-2000s action nostalgia — and its renewed popularity suggests Van Damme’s appeal has not disappeared.
