A BELOVED news anchor is leaving her role after three years of bringing locals the “best weekend newscast.”

The ABC News affiliate anchor said the week of March 1 would be her last as it’s time for her to focus on her “next steps.”

Megan Scarano, an Emmy-winning news anchor and reporter for ABC 33/40, said on March 1 that her time at the Birmingham, Alabama, news station would be coming to an end.

The journalist did not reveal why she was leaving.

“For the last three years, I’ve spent every weekend working to bring you the best weekend newscast. I truly hope we delivered,” she wrote in a statement on Facebook.

“I’m proud of what we’ve built with the weekend team. We brought home an Emmy together, and that is a moment I will always cherish because we did it together.

“I grew as a leader here, deepened and developed my storytelling skills, and learned what it meant to be working for you. Every newscast and story was as important as the last.”

Scarano said she had the opportunity to learn from the best at ABC 33/40, adding she would carry their lessons with her on the next chapter in her career.

“Thank you Alabama for welcoming me. Whether we met on the hardest of days, pushing for change, or we were celebrating, thank you for allowing me in,” she wrote.

Scarano joined the ABC 33/40 team in October 2022 after wrapping up her time as a weekend anchor at WCTI TV 12 and FOX 8/14, according to her LinkedIn.

The news anchor was recognized at the Southeast Emmy Awards in 2025 for the Best Daytime Newscast, where she also presented a few awards.

ABC 33/40’s coverage of the Bessemer Board of Education’s state takeover in 2024, which Scarano was part of, won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award in 2025.

Scarano did not announce what she has in store next for her career, but said she plans to continue in journalism.

“I love this work. I have no intention of doing anything else,” she said. “It’s time for me to focus on my next steps!”

Several other journalists flooded her Facebook comments with support.

“So so so proud of you. I truly mean it when I say you’re one of the best in this business. The sky is the limit for you!” Gillian Marie, a reporter with WBRC 6 News said.

“Megs— you’ve been a true asset to our team here! I know you will continue to do great things and tell the stories that matter! Thanks for coming to Alabama,” Valerie Bell, a fellow ABC 33/40 reporter, chimed in.

Viewers also shared that they will miss seeing Scarano on their TVs.

“We hate to see you go, but wishing you the best!” one person wrote on Facebook.

“I had the honor to have been interviewed by you for the Birmingham Bulls playoff game last year and the NBA preseason game at the start of this season. Sure am gonna miss you and wish you nothing but the best!” said another.

“You will be missed! ABC 33/40 really dropped the ball when they let you get away! Stopped watching week night when Brenda was replaced by an outsider!” another viewer wrote.
