Arriving on the streaming platform in 2015, Beasts of No Nation is a war drama centred on a young boy forced into becoming a child soldier after his family’s death. Fighting in a brutal civil war within his homeland, he confronts the grim realities of combat while desperately trying to survive against overwhelming odds.
The film draws from the 2005 novel of the same name, though the conflict at its centre is fictional, as is the specific West African nation depicted. However, it’s grounded in thorough research, human rights documentation and interviews with refugees to authentically portray the region’s conflicts.
The young protagonist, Agu, is seized and recruited by a manipulative rebel commander, known as the Commandant and portrayed by Idris Elba, before being compelled to fight for their cause. He’s stripped of his innocence and ultimately indoctrinated into the rebels’ ideology.
