Fauda Season 5 Confronts the Cost of Revenge and War

Two years after October 7, Doron and his fellow fighters are still living with the consequences of what happened. As an old friend’s revenge mission in Marseille pulls Doron into a dangerous undercover operation, Fauda Season 5 turns its focus toward trauma, retaliation and the devastating cycle of violence.

The season marks a significant shift for the Israeli series. When Season 4 arrived on Netflix in January 2023, co-creators Avi Issacharoff and Lior Raz had already begun developing the next chapter. Then came October 7.

Issacharoff says the writers quickly realized they could not tell another season about the realities of the Middle East and Israel while ignoring an event that had such a profound impact on the region.

For Raz, who returns as Doron, the goal was not to simply recreate what happened. Instead, Season 5 places the series’ fictional characters inside a reality shaped by those events, while striving to remain faithful to what people experienced.

A Story About Trauma, Not Just Battle

Set two years after October 7, 2023, Season 5 finds Doron facing both new enemies and the psychological scars of his past.

Doron is introduced trying to address his PTSD and meeting with a therapist. But the demands of his life quickly make it difficult for him to focus on healing.

That struggle reflects one of the ideas Raz says has been at the heart of Fauda since the beginning: the psychological price of conflict and how its consequences extend beyond the people who fight, affecting their families and friends as well.

Raz recalls that when he and Issacharoff first discussed creating Fauda more than a decade ago, he wanted the series to explore that human cost. After October 7, however, he says they gained a deeper understanding of how far trauma can reach.

Revenge Becomes the Season’s Central Question

The Arabic word fauda means “chaos,” but Issacharoff says another word became particularly important to Season 5: tha’r, referring to blood revenge.

The concept goes beyond ordinary retaliation. It describes an obligation to seek revenge after a relative has been killed by a rival tribe, country or other enemy.

That idea shapes the season as the characters become caught in a cycle of retaliation. Issacharoff says the story asks whether revenge actually changes anything — and whether it makes people or societies better.

Raz adds that although the season begins with revenge, it ultimately moves toward something very different.

For both creators, the larger message is about the consequences of war and the need to find another way forward. Raz hopes viewers will see the human cost of conflict and come away with a renewed sense that peace matters.

Two Episodes Return to October 7

Although most of the 11-episode season takes place in 2025, two episodes return specifically to October 7, 2023, following the characters through that day.

Writing those episodes was particularly difficult for Issacharoff and the team. He says they were acutely aware that the story could reopen painful memories for people who had lost loved ones — on both sides.

The writers ultimately decided that telling those stories was the right choice, despite the emotional weight involved.

Raz hopes the episodes will encourage viewers, particularly those who have strong opinions about the events without knowing exactly what happened, to watch, reflect and engage in conversation.

Issacharoff emphasizes that Fauda remains a television drama, not a documentary. Still, the creators wanted the season to raise difficult questions about revenge, continued bloodshed and where an endless cycle of violence ultimately leads.

“The Most Important Thing” Issacharoff Has Done

For Issacharoff, writing Season 5 also became a deeply personal experience.

He says the process gave him a way to channel pain and anger into the script and share those emotions with audiences in Israel, the Middle East, Europe and the United States.

After 26 years as a journalist and analyst, Issacharoff describes Season 5 as the most important and meaningful work of his career.
