Craig Melvin Returns to Today Show After Vacation with Family

Craig Melvin is back behind the Today desk.

The co-anchor, 47, returned to the show’s New York City studio on Thursday, July 30, over a week after he went on a pre-planned vacation to spend some time with family.

Melvin hosts the first two hours of Today alongside Savannah Guthrie as well as the 3rd Hour of Today with Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer.

He enjoyed a beach vacation on Hilton Head Island with his family during his time off. His wife, Lindsay Czarniak, shared a photo of the family — including their kids, Delano, 12, and Sybil, 9 — on Instagram on July 26.

The co-anchor said in his own post on Monday, July 27, that he was “soaking in every moment before we have to leave this place.”

Melvin announced his vacation during the 3rd Hour of Today on Wednesday, July 15. At the time, Roker, 71, revealed that MLS analyst and former U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team player Taylor Twellman would be filling in for Melvin while he was enjoying some family time.

Two days after the vacation announcement, a man was arrested after breaking into the Today show’s studio in New York City on Thursday, July 16, around 9 a.m. local time. Andrew Truelove, 41, was charged with one felony count of burglary in the third degree as a hate crime and one felony count of menacing in the third degree as a hate crime after the Thursday, July 16, incident, per the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

According to a complaint shared by the DA’s office on Friday, July 17, Truelove allegedly “went into the lobby at that location, followed behind an employee, who used their identification to scan in, past an employees-only area.” The man allegedly asked for Al Roker before yelling a racial slur at co-anchor Craig Melvin. Both Roker and Melvin have been granted temporary restraining orders.

“There was no altercation, and no one was injured,” NBC News confirmed in a statement. “Today is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and Today take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously,” the statement continued. “We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”

Sources later confirmed to PEOPLE that a security guard had since been fired. Melvin briefly addressed the incident during a previous broadcast, sharing that those on staff “are just very happy that everyone is safe.” NBC has since shared with guests that the show will follow “stricter” security measures for those appearing on the show.
