Channing Tatum Gives a Career-Best Performance as a Father Facing His Daughter’s Trauma in Josephine Trailer

Channing Tatum has never had quite as dramatic a role as in his new movie, Josephine.

Writer-director Beth de Araújo’s drama, which premiered to rave reviews at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in January, is in theaters Nov. 20. It centers on its young titular character — played by Mason Reeves in her feature film debut — who is the sole witness to a horrific crime in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

Tatum and Gemma Chan play the girl’s parents, who “struggle with helping their daughter cope while facing their own fears around the topic and how to address it with their child,” per an official synopsis.

As the newly released trailer suggests, de Araújo tells young Josephine’s story from her childlike perspective. “Josephine, you can look just at me,” says Eleanore Pienta, in close-up as a counselor guiding the girl through the trial following the incident.

“Look me in the eye and swear to me that you’re telling the truth,” Tatum, 46, can be seen telling the protagonist, crouched down at her level.

The movie’s trailer lists some of the descriptors of the breakout performance from Reeves, who was eight when filming. One critic called it “one of the great child performances of the decade.”
