The reason for Craig Melvin‘s latest Today absence isn’t what some might think.

The anchor was absent from the NBC morning show on Monday, July 20. Melvin’s break comes a few days after a scary incident on the Today set, as an intruder made his way backstage on Thursday, July 16. TMZ reported that the man sought out Melvin after being unable to find Al Roker, and allegedly lunged at the host and used a racial slur.

Melvin took to Instagram later that day to thank fans for their support and shared a statement released by Today, which read, “There was a security incident this morning at the Today show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured.”

The statement continued, “Today is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and Today take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff, and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”

Per NBC News, the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove, faces a count of menacing in the third degree as a hate crime and a count of burglary in the third degree as a hate crime.

Melvin’s absence from Today this week, however, is not due to the intruder incident. “Craig is on vacation, but we decided we needed a really special guest host,” Roker said while introducing guest host Taylor Twellman at the top of the third hour of Today‘s Monday episode.

Roker previously revealed that Twellman would fill in for Melvin on Monday during the show’s Wednesday, July 14, episode. “The Monday after the final, Taylor Twellman will be here, filling in for you,” he said to Melvin, who replied, “Not sure if we were supposed to share it just yet, but we are excited to have you.”

Twellman, who is a former U.S. Men’s soccer player and Apple TV‘s lead analyst for Major League Soccer, filled in for Melvin to talk all things the FIFA World Cup Final. Melvin hasn’t shared any glimpses into his family vacation on social media so far.

Melvin has not publicly spoken out about the Today set intruder since addressing the incident during the show’s Friday, July 17, episode. “You may have heard that, unfortunately, an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here in Studio 1A. Thankfully, he was apprehended quickly. He was placed under arrest,” Melvin told viewers. “We are cooperating fully with the NYPD as they investigate the matter, and we are just very happy that everyone is safe.”

Weekend Today‘s Laura Jarrett, who was filling in for Savannah Guthrie, stated, “Of course, we want to make sure that you’re safe.” Melvin wrapped up the discussion by confirming he was “safe and sound.”
